١٨٦ - باب فضل الأذان

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If people knew what reward lies in the call to prayer and the first row, and then found no way to obtain it except by drawing lots for it, they would draw lots for it. And if they knew what lies in hastening early to the prayer, they would race to it. And if they knew what lies in the night prayer (ʿishāʾ) and the dawn prayer (ṣubḥ), they would come to them both even if crawling." Agreed upon (al-Bukhārī and Muslim). Al-istihām means casting lots, and al-tahjīr means coming early to the prayer.

On the authority of Muʿāwiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The callers to prayer (muezzins) will be the longest-necked of people on the Day of Resurrection." Narrated by Muslim.

On the authority of ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Saʿṣaʿah: that Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "I see that you love sheep and the open country. So when you are with your sheep — or in your desert pasture — and you call to the prayer, raise your voice with the call, for nothing that hears the range of the muezzin's voice, whether jinn, human, or anything else, will fail to bear witness for him on the Day of Resurrection." Abū Saʿīd said: I heard it from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Narrated by al-Bukhārī.

On the authority of Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the call to prayer is made, Satan turns away, breaking wind so as not to hear the call. Then when the call is finished, he comes back. When the iqāmah is given for the prayer, he turns away again, and when the iqāmah is finished, he returns, until he comes between a man and his soul, saying: 'Remember such-and-such, remember such-and-such' — things he had not been remembering before — until the man is left not knowing how much he has prayed." Agreed upon (al-Bukhārī and Muslim). Al-tathwīb means the iqāmah.

On the authority of ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ (may Allah be pleased with them both): that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When you hear the call to prayer, say the like of what the muezzin says, then send blessings upon me, for whoever sends one blessing upon me, Allah sends ten blessings upon him for it. Then ask Allah to grant me al-wasīlah, for it is a rank in Paradise that befits none but one of Allah's servants, and I hope to be that one. So whoever asks for al-wasīlah for me, intercession becomes due for him." Narrated by Muslim.

On the authority of Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you hear the call to prayer, say as the muezzin says." Agreed upon (al-Bukhārī and Muslim).

On the authority of Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever says, when he hears the call to prayer: 'O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and the prayer about to be established, grant Muhammad al-wasīlah and the high station, and raise him to the praised station which You have promised him' — my intercession becomes due for him on the Day of Resurrection." Narrated by al-Bukhārī.

On the authority of Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he said: "Whoever says, when he hears the muezzin: 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger; I am content with Allah as Lord, with Muhammad as Messenger, and with Islam as religion' — his sins will be forgiven." Narrated by Muslim.

On the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Supplication made between the call to prayer (adhān) and the iqāmah is not rejected." Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who said: "A good (ḥasan) hadith."
