١٥٢ - باب ما يقال عند الميت وما يقوله من مات له ميت

From Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When you are present with the sick or the dying, speak well, for the angels say ‘Amīn’ to whatever you say.” She said: When Abū Salamah died, I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: “O Messenger of Allah, Abū Salamah has died.” He said: “Say: O Allah, forgive me and him, and grant me a good successor in his place.” So I said it, and Allah granted me in his place one who was better for me than him: Muḥammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Muslim reported it thus: “When you are present with the sick or the dying,” with the uncertainty (in wording), and Abū Dāwūd and others reported it: “the dying,” without uncertainty.

And from her (Umm Salamah), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “There is no servant who is struck by an affliction and says: ‘Indeed we belong to Allah and indeed to Him we shall return. O Allah, reward me in my affliction and give me in its place something better than it,’ except that Allah the Exalted rewards him in his affliction and gives him in its place something better than it.” She said: So when Abū Salamah passed away, I said as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had commanded me, and Allah gave me in his place one better than him: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Muslim reported it.

And from Abū Mūsā (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When a servant’s child dies, Allah the Exalted says to His angels: ‘Have you taken the child of My servant?’ They say: ‘Yes.’ He says: ‘Have you taken the fruit of his heart?’ They say: ‘Yes.’ He says: ‘What did My servant say?’ They say: ‘He praised You and said: To Allah we belong and to Him we return.’ Then Allah the Exalted says: ‘Build for My servant a house in Paradise, and name it the House of Praise.’” Al-Tirmidhī reported it and said: “A good (ḥasan) hadith.”

And from Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Allah the Exalted says: My believing servant has no reward with Me, when I take his dear one from among the people of this world and he then bears it patiently seeking reward, except Paradise.” Al-Bukhārī reported it.

And from Usāmah ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: One of the daughters of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent to him, calling him and informing him that a small child of hers — or a son — was dying. He said to the messenger: “Return to her and tell her that to Allah the Exalted belongs what He takes and to Him belongs what He gives, and everything with Him has an appointed term; so command her to be patient and to seek reward.” ... and he mentioned the rest of the hadith. Agreed upon.
