١١٦ - باب جواز الشرب من جميع الأواني الطاهرة غير الذهب والفضة وجواز الكرع - وهو الشرب بالفم من النهر وغيره بغير إناء ولا يد - وتحريم استعمال إناء الذهب والفضة في الشرب والأكل والطهارة وسائر وجوه الاستعمال

And on the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The time for prayer came, so those whose houses were near got up to go to their families [to perform wudu], while a group remained. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was brought a basin of stone, but the basin was too small for him to spread his hand in it; yet all the people performed wudu from it. They asked: How many were you? He said: Eighty and more. Agreed upon; this is al-Bukhārī's narration. And in a narration of his and of Muslim: that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for a vessel of water, and a shallow, wide bowl was brought to him with a little water in it, and he placed his fingers in it. Anas said: So I began to watch the water gushing forth from between his fingers, and I reckoned that those who performed wudu were between seventy and eighty.

And on the authority of ʿAbdullāh ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us, so we brought out for him water in a tawr of brass, and he performed wudu. Narrated by al-Bukhārī. «Al-ṣufr»: with a ḍammah on the ṣād, though a kasrah is also permissible, and it is brass (copper); and «al-tawr»: is like a bowl, and it is [spelt] with the two-dotted tāʾ from above.

And on the authority of Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) visited a man of the Anṣār, and he had a companion with him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If you have water that has stayed overnight this night in a waterskin [bring it]; otherwise we will drink straight from the source.” Narrated by al-Bukhārī. «Al-shann»: the waterskin.

And on the authority of Ḥudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade us from [wearing] silk and brocade, and from drinking from vessels of gold and silver, and he said: “They are for them [the disbelievers] in this world, and they are for you in the Hereafter.” Agreed upon.

And on the authority of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The one who drinks from a vessel of silver only makes the fire of Hell gurgle in his belly.” Agreed upon. And in a narration of Muslim: “Indeed the one who eats or drinks from a vessel of silver and gold.” And in a narration of his: “Whoever drinks from a vessel of gold or silver only makes a fire from Hell gurgle in his belly.”
