Allah, the Exalted, said:
رياض الصالحينAbū Zakariyyā Muḥyī al-Dīn Yaḥyā ibn Sharaf al-Nawawī٢٥٥ - باب تحريم سماع الغيبة وأمر من سمع غيبة محرمة بردها والإنكار على قائلها فإن عجز أو لم يقبل منه فارق ذلك المجلس إن أمكنه
٢٥٥ - باب تحريم سماع الغيبة وأمر من سمع غيبة محرمة بردها والإنكار على قائلها فإن عجز أو لم يقبل منه فارق ذلك المجلس إن أمكنه
And when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it and say, "For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. Peace will be upon you;1 we seek not the ignorant."
And He, the Exalted, said:
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنِ ٱللَّغْوِ مُعْرِضُونَ
And they who turn away from ill speech
وقال تَعَالَى:
And He, the Exalted, said:
وَلَا تَقْفُ مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِۦ عِلْمٌ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَٱلْبَصَرَ وَٱلْفُؤَادَ كُلُّ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ كَانَ عَنْهُ مَسْـُٔولًا
And do not pursue1 that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
وقال تَعَالَى:
And He, the Exalted, said:
وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَ ٱلَّذِينَ يَخُوضُونَ فِىٓ ءَايَـٰتِنَا فَأَعْرِضْ عَنْهُمْ حَتَّىٰ يَخُوضُوا۟ فِى حَدِيثٍ غَيْرِهِۦ ۚ وَإِمَّا يُنسِيَنَّكَ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ فَلَا تَقْعُدْ بَعْدَ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ مَعَ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
And when you see those who engage in [offensive] discourse1 concerning Our verses, then turn away from them until they enter into another conversation. And if Satan should cause you to forget, then do not remain after the reminder with the wrongdoing people.
وعن أَبي الدرداء - ﵁ - عن النبيِّ - ﷺ - قَالَ: «مَنْ رَدَّ عَنْ عِرْضِ أخيهِ، رَدَّ اللهُ عَنْ وَجْهِهِ النَّارَ يَومَ القيَامَةِ». رواه الترمذي، وقال: «حديث حسن».
Abū al-Dardāʾ (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever defends the honour of his brother, Allah will shield his face from the Fire on the Day of Resurrection." Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, who said: "A good (ḥasan) ḥadīth."
وعن عِتبَانَ بنِ مَالكٍ - ﵁ - في حديثه الطويل المشهور الَّذِي تقدَّمَ في بابِ الرَّجاء قَالَ: قام النبيّ - ﷺ - يُصَلِّي فَقَالَ: «أيْنَ مالِكُ بنُ الدُّخْشُمِ؟» فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ: ذَلِكَ مُنَافِقٌ لا يُحِبُّ اللهَ ولا رَسُولهُ، فَقَالَ النبيّ - ﷺ: «لاَ تَقُلْ ذَلِكَ ألاَ تَراهُ قَدْ قَالَ: لا إلهَ إِلاَّ اللهُ يُريدُ بِذَلكَ وَجْهَ اللهِ! وإنَّ الله قَدْ حَرَّمَ عَلَى النَّارِ مَنْ قَالَ: لاَ إلهَ إِلاَّ اللهُ يَبْتَغي بِذَلِكَ وَجْهَ اللهِ». متفق عَلَيْهِ. «وَعِتْبان» بكسر العين عَلَى المشهور وحُكِيَ ضَمُّها وبعدها تاءٌ مثناة مِن فوق ثُمَّ باءٌ موحدة. و«الدُّخْشُم» بضم الدال وإسكان الخاء وضم الشين المعجمتين.
ʿItbān ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him), in his long and well-known ḥadīth which was related earlier in the Chapter on Hope, said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood to pray and asked: "Where is Mālik ibn al-Dukhshum?" A man replied: That one is a hypocrite who loves neither Allah nor His Messenger. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not say that. Do you not see that he has said, 'There is no deity except Allah,' seeking thereby the Face of Allah? Indeed Allah has forbidden the Fire to anyone who says, 'There is no deity except Allah,' seeking thereby the Face of Allah." Agreed upon. ["ʿItbān" is with a kasrah on the ʿayn according to the well-known view, though a ḍammah is also reported; it is followed by a two-dotted tāʾ from above, then a single-dotted bāʾ. "Al-Dukhshum" is with a ḍammah on the dāl, a sukūn on the khāʾ, and a ḍammah on the shīn — both being dotted letters.]
وعن كعب بن مالك - ﵁ - في حديثه الطويل في قصةِ تَوْبَتِهِ وَقَدْ سبق في باب التَّوبةِ. قَالَ: قَالَ النبيُّ - ﷺ - وَهُوَ جالِسٌ في القَومِ بِتَبُوكَ: «مَا فَعَلَ كَعبُ بن مالكٍ؟» فَقَالَ رَجلٌ مِنْ بَنِي سَلمَةَ: يَا رسولَ الله، حَبَسَهُ بُرْدَاهُ والنَّظَرُ في عِطْفَيْهِ. فَقَالَ لَهُ مُعاذُ بنُ جبلٍ - ﵁: بِئْسَ مَا قُلْتَ، والله يَا رسولَ الله مَا علمنا عَلَيْهِ إِلاَّ خَيْرًا، فَسَكَتَ رسُولُ الله - ﷺ. متفقٌ عَلَيْهِ. «عِطْفَاهُ»: جَانِبَاهُ، وهو إشارةٌ إلى إعجابِهِ بنفسِهِ.
Kaʿb ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him), in his long ḥadīth about the story of his repentance — which was related earlier in the Chapter on Repentance — said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, while he was sitting among the people at Tabūk: "What has Kaʿb ibn Mālik done?" A man from the Banū Salimah replied: O Messenger of Allah, his two cloaks and his gazing at his own flanks have held him back. Muʿādh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: What an evil thing you have said! By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, we know nothing of him but good. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. Agreed upon. ["His two flanks" means his two sides; it is an allusion to his self-admiration.]
