Allah, the Exalted, said:
رياض الصالحينAbū Zakariyyā Muḥyī al-Dīn Yaḥyā ibn Sharaf al-Nawawī٢٤ - باب تغليظ عقوبة من أمر بمعروف أو نهى عن منكر وخالف قوله فعله
٢٤ - باب تغليظ عقوبة من أمر بمعروف أو نهى عن منكر وخالف قوله فعله
Do you order righteousness of the people and forget1 yourselves while you recite the Scripture? Then will you not reason?
And He, the Exalted, said:
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لِمَ تَقُولُونَ مَا لَا تَفْعَلُونَ
O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do?
وَقالَ تَعَالَى إخبارًا عن شعيب - ﷺ:
And He, the Exalted, said, reporting about Shuʿayb (peace and blessings be upon him):
قَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ أَرَءَيْتُمْ إِن كُنتُ عَلَىٰ بَيِّنَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّى وَرَزَقَنِى مِنْهُ رِزْقًا حَسَنًا ۚ وَمَآ أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُخَالِفَكُمْ إِلَىٰ مَآ أَنْهَىٰكُمْ عَنْهُ ۚ إِنْ أُرِيدُ إِلَّا ٱلْإِصْلَـٰحَ مَا ٱسْتَطَعْتُ ۚ وَمَا تَوْفِيقِىٓ إِلَّا بِٱللَّهِ ۚ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ وَإِلَيْهِ أُنِيبُ
He said, "O my people, have you considered: if I am upon clear evidence from my Lord and He has provided me with a good provision from Him...?1 And I do not intend to differ from you in that which I have forbidden you; I only intend reform as much as I am able. And my success is not but through Allāh. Upon Him I have relied, and to Him I return.2
وعن أَبي زيد أسامة بن حارثة ﵄، قَالَ: سمعت رَسُول الله - ﷺ - يقول: «يُؤْتَى بالرَّجُلِ يَوْمَ القيَامَةِ فَيُلْقَى في النَّارِ، فَتَنْدَلِقُ أقْتَابُ بَطْنِهِ فَيدُورُ بِهَا كَمَا يَدُورُ الحِمَارُ في الرَّحَى، فَيَجْتَمِعُ إِلَيْه أهْلُ النَّارِ، فَيَقُولُونَ: يَا فُلانُ، مَا لَكَ؟ أَلَمْ تَكُ تَأمُرُ بالمعْرُوفِ وَتنهَى عَنِ المُنْكَرِ؟ فَيقُولُ: بَلَى، كُنْتُ آمُرُ بِالمَعْرُوفِ وَلا آتِيهِ، وأنْهَى عَنِ المُنْكَرِ وَآتِيهِ». مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيهِ. قوله: «تَنْدلِقُ» هُوَ بالدالِ المهملةِ، ومعناه تَخرُجُ. وَ«الأَقْتَابُ»: الأمعاءُ، واحدها قِتْبٌ.
And on the authority of Abū Zayd Usāmah ibn Ḥārithah (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "A man will be brought on the Day of Resurrection and cast into the Fire, and his intestines will spill out, and he will go round and round with them as a donkey goes round a millstone. The people of the Fire will gather around him and say: O so-and-so, what is the matter with you? Did you not enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong? He will reply: Yes indeed, I used to enjoin what is right but not do it myself, and forbid what is wrong but do it myself." Agreed upon (al-Bukhārī and Muslim). [al-Nawawī said:] His words "tandaliqu" are with the undotted dāl, and its meaning is "to come out." And "al-aqtāb" are the intestines; its singular is "qitb."
