Know that what is preferred for the servant, while in a state of health, is that he be both fearful and hopeful, and that his fear and his hope be equal; whereas in a state of illness, hope alone is to be made to predominate. The principles of the Sacred Law — drawn from the texts of the Book and the Sunnah, and from other sources besides — converge in support of this.

٥٣ - باب الجمع بين الخوف والرجاء
Allah the Exalted said:
Then, did they feel secure from the plan of Allāh? But no one feels secure from the plan of Allāh except the losing people.
وقال تَعَالَى:
And He the Exalted said:
يَـٰبَنِىَّ ٱذْهَبُوا۟ فَتَحَسَّسُوا۟ مِن يُوسُفَ وَأَخِيهِ وَلَا تَا۟يْـَٔسُوا۟ مِن رَّوْحِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يَا۟يْـَٔسُ مِن رَّوْحِ ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلْقَوْمُ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ
O my sons, go and find out about Joseph and his brother and despair not of relief from Allāh. Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allāh except the disbelieving people."
وقال تَعَالَى:
And He the Exalted said:
يَوْمَ تَبْيَضُّ وُجُوهٌ وَتَسْوَدُّ وُجُوهٌ ۚ فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ٱسْوَدَّتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ أَكَفَرْتُم بَعْدَ إِيمَـٰنِكُمْ فَذُوقُوا۟ ٱلْعَذَابَ بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَكْفُرُونَ
On the Day [some] faces will turn white and [some] faces will turn black. As for those whose faces turn black, [to them it will be said], "Did you disbelieve [i.e., reject faith] after your belief? Then taste the punishment for what you used to reject."
وقال تَعَالَى:
And He the Exalted said:
فَلَمَّا عَتَوْا۟ عَن مَّا نُهُوا۟ عَنْهُ قُلْنَا لَهُمْ كُونُوا۟ قِرَدَةً خَـٰسِـِٔينَ
So when they were insolent about that which they had been forbidden, We said to them, "Be apes, despised."
وقال تَعَالَى:
And He the Exalted said:
إِنَّ ٱلْأَبْرَارَ لَفِى نَعِيمٍ
Indeed, the righteous will be in pleasure,
وقال تَعَالَى:
And He the Exalted said:
فَأَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ
Then as for one whose scales are heavy [with good deeds],
والآيات في هذا المعنى كثيرةٌ. فَيَجْتَمعُ الخَوفُ والرجاءُ في آيَتَيْنِ مُقْتَرِنَتَيْنِ أَو آيات أَو آية.
The verses bearing this meaning are many. Fear and hope are brought together within two paired verses, or within several verses, or within a single verse.
وعن أَبي هريرة - ﵁: أنَّ رسول الله - ﷺ - قَالَ: «لَوْ يَعْلَمُ الْمُؤمِنُ مَا عِنْدَ الله مِنَ العُقُوبَةِ، مَا طَمِعَ بِجَنَّتِهِ أَحَدٌ، وَلَوْ يَعْلَمُ الكَافِرُ مَا عِنْدَ الله مِنَ الرَّحْمَةِ، مَا قَنَطَ مِنْ جَنَّتِهِ أحَدٌ». رواه مسلم.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If the believer knew the punishment that is with Allah, no one would set his hopes on His Paradise; and if the disbeliever knew the mercy that is with Allah, no one would despair of His Paradise." Narrated by Muslim.
وعن أَبي سعيد الخدرِيِّ - ﵁: أنَّ رسولَ الله - ﷺ - قَالَ: «إِذَا وُضِعَتِ الجنازةُ واحْتَمَلَهَا النَّاسُ أَوِ الرِّجَالُ عَلَى أَعناقِهِمْ، فَإنْ كَانَتْ صَالِحَةً، قَالَتْ: قَدِّمُونِي قَدِّمُونِي، وَإنْ كَانَتْ غَيْرَ صَالِحَةٍ، قالتْ: يَا وَيْلَهَا! أَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ بِهَا؟ يَسْمَعُ صَوْتَها كُلُّ شَيْءٍ إِلاَّ الإنْسانُ، وَلَوْ سَمِعَهُ صَعِقَ». رواه البخاري.
Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "When the bier is laid out and the people — or the men — bear it upon their shoulders, then if it was righteous it says, 'Take me forward, take me forward!'; and if it was not righteous it says, 'Woe to it! Where are you taking it?' Every thing hears its voice except man, and were he to hear it, he would fall down senseless." Narrated by al-Bukhari.
وعن ابن مسعود - ﵁ - قَالَ: قَالَ رسول الله - ﷺ: «الجَنَّةُ أقْرَبُ إِلَى أَحَدِكُمْ مِنْ شِرَاكِ نَعْلِهِ، وَالنَّارُ مِثْلُ ذلك». رواه البخاري.
Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Paradise is nearer to any one of you than the strap of his sandal, and the Fire is likewise." Narrated by al-Bukhari.
