Chapter: The prohibition of a woman observing mourning for a deceased person beyond three days, except for her husband — four months and ten days.
Zaynab bint Abī Salama (may Allah be pleased with them) said: I entered upon Umm Ḥabība (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, when her father Abū Sufyān ibn Ḥarb (may Allah be pleased with him) died. She called for a perfume in which there was a yellowness of khalūq or something else, rubbed some of it on a slave-girl, then touched her own cheeks with it. Then she said: By Allah, I have no need of perfume, except that I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say upon the pulpit: "It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for a deceased person beyond three nights, except for a husband — four months and ten days." Zaynab said: Then I entered upon Zaynab bint Jaḥsh (may Allah be pleased with her) when her brother died. She called for perfume and touched some of it, then said: By Allah, I have no need of perfume, except that I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say upon the pulpit: "It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for a deceased person beyond three nights, except for a husband — four months and ten days." Agreed upon.
