Allah the Exalted has said:
رياض الصالحينAbū Zakariyyā Muḥyī al-Dīn Yaḥyā ibn Sharaf al-Nawawī١٧ - باب في وجوب الانقياد لحكم الله وما يقوله من دعي إلى ذلك وأمر بمعروف أو نهي عن منكر
١٧ - باب في وجوب الانقياد لحكم الله وما يقوله من دعي إلى ذلك وأمر بمعروف أو نهي عن منكر
But no, by your Lord, they will not [truly] believe until they make you, [O Muḥammad], judge concerning that over which they dispute among themselves and then find within themselves no discomfort from what you have judged and submit in [full, willing] submission.
And He the Exalted has said:
إِنَّمَا كَانَ قَوْلَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِذَا دُعُوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ لِيَحْكُمَ بَيْنَهُمْ أَن يَقُولُوا۟ سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا ۚ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ
The only statement of the [true] believers when they are called to Allāh and His Messenger to judge between them is that they say, "We hear and we obey." And those are the successful.
وفيه من الأحاديث: حديث أَبي هريرة المذكور في أول الباب قبله وغيره من الأحاديث فِيهِ.
Among the hadiths [bearing] on this [theme] is the hadith of Abū Hurayrah mentioned at the beginning of the preceding chapter, and others among the hadiths on it.
عن أَبي هريرة - ﵁ - قَالَ: لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ عَلَى رَسُول الله - ﷺ: ﴿للهِ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الأَرْضِ وَإِنْ تُبْدُوا مَا فِي أَنْفُسِكُمْ أَو تُخْفُوهُ يُحَاسِبْكُمْ بِهِ اللهُ﴾ الآية [البقرة: ٢٨٣] اشْتَدَّ ذلِكَ عَلَى أصْحَابِ رَسُول الله - ﷺ - فَأتَوا رَسُول الله - ﷺ - ثُمَّ بَرَكُوا عَلَى الرُّكَبِ، فَقَالُوا: أيْ رسولَ الله، كُلِّفْنَا مِنَ الأَعمَالِ مَا نُطِيقُ: الصَّلاةَ والجِهَادَ والصِّيامَ والصَّدَقَةَ، وَقَدْ أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْكَ هذِهِ الآيَةُ وَلا نُطيقُها. قَالَ رَسُول الله - ﷺ: «أتُرِيدُونَ أَنْ تَقُولُوا كَمَا قَالَ أَهْلُ الكتَابَينِ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ: سَمِعْنَا وَعَصَيْنَا؟ بَلْ قُولُوا: سَمِعنَا وَأَطَعْنَا غُفْرَانَكَ رَبَّنَا وَإِلَيْكَ المَصِيرُ» فَلَمَّا اقْتَرَأَهَا القومُ، وَذَلَّتْ بِهَا ألْسنَتُهُمْ أنْزَلَ اللهُ تَعَالَى في إثرِهَا: ﴿آمَنَ الرَّسُولُ بِمَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ رَبِّهِ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ كُلٌّ آمَنَ بِاللهِ وَمَلائِكَتِهِ وَكُتُبِهِ وَرُسُلِهِ لا نُفَرِّقُ بَيْنَ أَحَدٍ مِنْ رُسُلِهِ وَقَالُوا سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا غُفْرَانَكَ رَبَّنَا وَإِلَيْكَ الْمَصِيرُ﴾ [البقرة: ٢٨٥]. فَلَمَّا فَعَلُوا ذلِكَ نَسَخَهَا اللهُ تَعَالَى، فَأنزَلَ الله - ﷿: ﴿لا يُكَلِّفُ اللهُ نَفْسًا إِلاَّ وُسْعَهَا لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا مَا اكْتَسَبَتْ رَبَّنَا لا تُؤَاخِذْنَا إِنْ نَسِينَا أَوْ أَخْطَأْنَا﴾ [البقرة: ٢٨٦] قَالَ: نَعَمْ ﴿رَبَّنَا وَلا تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْنَا إِصْرًا كَمَا حَمَلْتَهُ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِنَا﴾ قَالَ: نَعَمْ ﴿رَبَّنَا وَلا تُحَمِّلْنَا مَا لا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِه﴾ قَالَ: نَعَمْ ﴿وَاعْفُ عَنَّا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا أَنْتَ مَوْلانَا فَانْصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ﴾ قَالَ: نَعَمْ. رواه مسلم.
On the authority of Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: When there was revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the verse, "To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Whether you disclose what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it" [al-Baqarah: 283] — that weighed heavily upon the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then knelt down on their knees and said: "O Messenger of Allah, we have been charged with deeds that we can bear — the prayer, jihād, fasting, and charity — but this verse has been revealed to you and we cannot bear it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Do you wish to say as the People of the two Books said before you, 'We hear and we disobey'? Rather say, 'We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return.'" When the people recited it and their tongues yielded to it, Allah the Exalted sent down in its wake: "The Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and [so do] the believers. Each one believes in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers, [saying], 'We make no distinction between any of His messengers.' And they said, 'We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return'" [al-Baqarah: 285]. When they did that, Allah the Exalted abrogated it, and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sent down: "Allah does not charge a soul except [with] its capacity. It shall have what [good] it has earned, and against it shall be what [evil] it has earned. Our Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or err" [al-Baqarah: 286]. He said: "Yes." "Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us." He said: "Yes." "Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no power to bear." He said: "Yes." "And pardon us, and forgive us, and have mercy upon us. You are our Protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people." He said: "Yes." Narrated by Muslim.
