Chapter: The prohibition of al-qazaʿ — which is shaving part of the head and leaving part — and the permissibility of shaving all of it for a man but not for a woman.

Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade al-qazaʿ. Agreed upon.

He also reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a boy part of whose head had been shaved and part left, so he forbade them from that and said: “Shave all of it, or leave all of it.” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a sound chain meeting the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
وعن عبد الله بن جعفر ﵄: أنَّ النَّبيَّ - ﷺ - أمْهَلَ آلَ جَعْفَر ثَلاَثًا، ثُمَّ أتَاهُمْ، فَقَالَ: «لاَ تَبْكُوا عَلَى أخِي بَعْدَ اليَوْمِ» ثُمَّ قَالَ: «ادْعُوا لِي بَنِي أَخِي» فَجِيءَ بِنَا كَأنَّنَا أفْرُخٌ فَقَالَ: «ادْعُوا لِي الحَلاَّقَ» فَأمرَهُ، فَحَلَقَ رُؤُوسَنَا. رواه أَبُو داود بإسناد صحيح عَلَى شرط البخاري ومسلم.
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet ﷺ gave the family of Jaʿfar a respite of three days [after his martyrdom], then came to them and said: “Do not weep over my brother after today.” Then he said: “Call my brother’s sons to me,” and we were brought as though we were chicks. He said: “Call the barber for me,” and he ordered him, so he shaved our heads. Narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a sound chain meeting the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
وعن عليٍّ - ﵁ - قَالَ: نَهَى رسُولُ اللهِ - ﷺ - أَنْ تَحْلِقَ المَرْأةُ رَأسَهَا. رواه النسائي.
ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade that a woman shave her head. Narrated by al-Nasāʼī.
