Allah, the Exalted, said:
رياض الصالحينAbū Zakariyyā Muḥyī al-Dīn Yaḥyā ibn Sharaf al-Nawawī٣٧ - باب الإنفاق مما يحب ومن الجيد
٣٧ - باب الإنفاق مما يحب ومن الجيد
Never will you attain the good [reward]1 until you spend [in the way of Allāh] from that which you love. And whatever you spend - indeed, Allāh is Knowing of it.
And He, the Exalted, said:
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ أَنفِقُوا۟ مِن طَيِّبَـٰتِ مَا كَسَبْتُمْ وَمِمَّآ أَخْرَجْنَا لَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ وَلَا تَيَمَّمُوا۟ ٱلْخَبِيثَ مِنْهُ تُنفِقُونَ وَلَسْتُم بِـَٔاخِذِيهِ إِلَّآ أَن تُغْمِضُوا۟ فِيهِ ۚ وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَنِىٌّ حَمِيدٌ
O you who have believed, spend from the good things which you have earned and from that which We have produced for you from the earth. And do not aim toward the defective therefrom, spending [from that] while you would not take it [yourself] except with closed eyes. And know that Allāh is Free of need and Praiseworthy.
عن أنس - ﵁ - قَالَ: كَانَ أَبُو طَلْحَةَ - ﵁ - أكْثَرَ الأنْصَار بالمَدِينَةِ مَالًا مِنْ نَخْل، وَكَانَ أَحَبُّ أمْوالِهِ إِلَيْه بَيْرَحَاء، وَكَانتْ مُسْتَقْبلَةَ المَسْجِدِ وَكَانَ رَسُول الله - ﷺ يَدْخُلُهَا وَيَشْرَبُ مِنْ مَاءٍ فِيهَا طَيِّب. قَالَ أنَسٌ: فَلَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هذِهِ الآيةُ: ﴿لَنْ تَنَالُوا الْبِرَّ حَتَّى تُنْفِقُوا مِمَّا تُحِبُّونَ﴾ قام أَبُو طَلْحَةَ إِلَى رسولِ الله - ﷺ - فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُول الله، إنَّ الله تَعَالَى أنْزَلَ عَلَيْكَ: ﴿لَنْ تَنَالُوا الْبِرَّ حَتَّى تُنْفِقُوا مِمَّا تُحِبُّونَ﴾ وَإنَّ أَحَبَّ مَالِي إِلَيَّ بَيْرَحَاءُ، وَإنَّهَا صَدَقَةٌ للهِ تَعَالَى، أرْجُو بِرَّهَا، وَذُخْرَهَا عِنْدَ الله تَعَالَى، فَضَعْهَا يَا رَسُول الله حَيْثُ أرَاكَ الله، فَقَالَ رَسُول الله - ﷺ: «بَخ ! ذلِكَ مَالٌ رَابحٌ، ذلِكَ مَالٌ رَابحٌ، وقَدْ سَمِعْتُ مَا قُلْتَ، وَإنِّي أرَى أَنْ تَجْعَلَهَا في الأقْرَبينَ»، فَقَالَ أَبُو طَلْحَةَ: أفْعَلُ يَا رَسُول الله، فَقَسَّمَهَا أَبُو طَلْحَةَ في أقَارِبِهِ، وبَنِي عَمِّهِ. مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيهِ. قوله - ﷺ: «مالٌ رابحٌ»، رُوِيَ في الصحيحين «رابحٌ» و«رايحٌ» بالباء الموحدة وبالياءِ المثناةِ، أي: رايح عَلَيْكَ نفعه، وَ«بَيرَحَاءُ»: حديقة نخلٍ، وروي بكسرِ الباءِ وَفتحِها.
On the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: Abū Ṭalḥah (may Allah be pleased with him) was the wealthiest of the Anṣār in Madinah in property of date-palms, and the dearest of his properties to him was Bayruḥāʾ, which faced the mosque. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to enter it and drink from the good water that was in it. Anas said: When this verse was revealed — ﴿You will not attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love﴾ — Abū Ṭalḥah rose and went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of Allah, Allah the Exalted has revealed to you, ﴿You will not attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love﴾, and the dearest of my property to me is Bayruḥāʾ. It is a charity for the sake of Allah the Exalted; I hope for its merit and its reward stored up with Allah the Exalted. So place it, O Messenger of Allah, wherever Allah shows you." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Bakh! That is profitable property, that is profitable property. I have heard what you said, and I am of the view that you should place it among your nearest relatives." Abū Ṭalḥah said: "I shall do so, O Messenger of Allah." So Abū Ṭalḥah divided it among his relatives and his cousins. Agreed upon. His saying ﷺ, "profitable property (māl rābiḥ)": it is narrated in the two Ṣaḥīḥs as both "rābiḥ" and "rāyiḥ" — with the single-dotted bāʾ and with the two-dotted yāʾ — that is, its benefit returns to you. And "Bayruḥāʾ" is a garden of date-palms; it is also narrated with a kasrah on the bāʾ and with a fatḥah on it.
