Hadith1657

- ﵁ - - ﷺ:

From ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The deceased is punished in his grave because of the wailing made over him." And in a narration: "for as long as he is wailed over." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

Hadith1658

- ﵁ - - ﷺ:

From Ibn Masʿud (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is not one of us who strikes the cheeks, rends the garments, and calls out with the call of the Days of Ignorance (al-jāhiliyyah)." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

Hadith1659

- ﷺ - - ﷺ -

From Abu Burdah, who said: Abu Musa fell ill and lost consciousness, with his head in the lap of a woman of his household. She began to cry out loudly, and he was unable to respond to her at all. When he came to, he said: "I disown those whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) disowned. Indeed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) disowned the woman who wails loudly (al-ṣāliqah), the woman who shaves her head (al-ḥāliqah), and the woman who rends her garment (al-shāqqah)." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim). "al-ṣāliqah": she who raises her voice in wailing and lamentation. "al-ḥāliqah": she who shaves her head at a calamity. "al-shāqqah": she who tears her garment.

Hadith1660

وعن المغيرة بن شعبة - ﵁ - قال: سمعتُ رسُولَ اللهِ - ﷺ - يقولُ: «مَنْ نِيحَ عَلَيْهِ، فَإنَّهُ يُعَذَّبُ بِمَا نِيحَ عَلَيهِ يَومَ القِيَامَةِ». متفق عليه.

From al-Mughirah ibn Shuʿbah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever is wailed over will be punished, on account of the wailing made over him, on the Day of Resurrection." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

Hadith1661

وعن أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ نُسَيْبَةَ - بِضَمِّ النون وفتحها - ﵂، قالت: أخَذَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ - ﷺ - عِندَ البَيْعَةِ أَنْ لاَ نَنُوحَ. متفق عليه.

From Umm ʿAtiyyah Nusaybah — with a ḍammah or a fathah on the nūn — (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took from us, at the pledge of allegiance, that we would not wail [for the dead]. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

Hadith1662

وعن النعمان بن بشير ﵄، قال: أُغْمِيَ عَلَى عَبدِ اللهِ بْنِ رَوَاحَةَ - ﵁ - فَجَعَلَتْ أُخْتُهُ تَبْكِي، وَتَقُولُ: وَاجَبَلاهُ، وَاكَذَا، وَاكَذَا: تُعَدِّدُ عَلَيْهِ. فقالَ حِينَ أفَاقَ: مَا قُلْتِ شَيْئًا إلاَّ قِيلَ لِي أنْتَ كَذَلِكَ؟!. رواه البخاري.

From al-Nuʿman ibn Bashir (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: ʿAbdullah ibn Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him) fell unconscious, and his sister began to weep, saying: "O my mountain! O so-and-so! O so-and-so!" — enumerating his virtues. When he came to, he said: "You did not say anything but that it was said to me: 'Are you really so?'" Narrated by al-Bukhari.

Hadith1663

وعن ابن عمر ﵄، قال: اشْتَكَى سَعْدُ بنُ عُبَادَةَ - ﵁ - شَكْوَى، فَأتاهُ رسُولُ الله - ﷺ - يَعُودُهُ مَعَ عَبدِ الرَّحمانِ بْنِ عَوفٍ، وَسَعْدِ بن أبي وقَّاصٍ، وعبدِ اللهِ بن مسعودٍ - ﵃. فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ، وَجَدَهُ في غَشْيَةٍ فَقالَ: «أقَضَى؟» قالوا: لا يا رسول اللهِ، فَبكَى رسولُ اللهِ - ﷺ - فَلَمَّا رَأى القَوْمُ بُكَاءَ النَّبيِّ - ﷺ - بَكَوْا، قال: «ألاَ تَسْمَعُونَ؟ إنَّ اللهَ لاَ يُعَذِّبُ بِدَمْعِ العَيْنِ، وَلاَ بِحُزْنِ القَلْبِ، وَلكِنْ يُعَذِّبُ بِهذَا - وَأشَارَ إلَى لِسَانِهِ - أو يَرْحَمُ». متفق عليه.

From Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: Saʿd ibn ʿUbadah (may Allah be pleased with him) suffered an illness, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to visit him, together with ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn ʿAwf, Saʿd ibn Abi Waqqas, and ʿAbdullah ibn Masʿud (may Allah be pleased with them). When he entered upon him, he found him in a faint, and said: "Has he passed away?" They said: "No, O Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wept, and when the people saw the Prophet's weeping, they wept too. He said: "Do you not hear? Allah does not punish for the tears of the eye, nor for the grief of the heart, but He punishes on account of this" — and he pointed to his tongue — "or He shows mercy." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

Hadith1664

وعن أبي مالك الأشعري - ﵁ - قال: قال رسولُ اللهِ - ﷺ: «النَّائِحَةُ إذا لَمْ تَتُبْ قَبلَ مَوْتِهَا تُقَامُ يَومَ القِيَامَةِ وَعَلَيْهَا سِرْبَالٌ مِنْ قَطِرَانٍ، وَدِرْعٌ مِنْ جَرَبٍ». رواه مسلم.

From Abu Malik al-Ashʿari (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The wailing woman, if she does not repent before her death, will be made to stand on the Day of Resurrection wearing a garment of tar and a shirt of scabs." Narrated by Muslim.

Hadith1665

وعن أَسِيد بن أبي أَسِيدٍ التابِعِيِّ، عن امْرَأةٍ مِنَ المُبَايِعاتِ، قالت: كان فِيما أخَذَ عَلَيْنَا رسُولُ اللهِ - ﷺ - فِي المَعْرُوفِ الَّذِي أخَذَ عَلَيْنَا أَنْ لاَ نَعْصِيَهُ فِيهِ: أَنْ لا نَخْمِشَ وَجْهًا، وَلاَ نَدْعُوَ وَيْلًا، وَلاَ نَشُقَّ جَيْبًا، وأنْ لاَ نَنْشُرَ شَعْرًا. رواه أبو داود بإسناد حسن.

From Asid ibn Abi Asid the Successor (tābiʿī), from a woman among those who gave the pledge, who said: Among what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took upon us, in the [pledge of] good conduct in which he took from us that we would not disobey him, was: that we would not scratch a face, nor cry out 'woe!', nor rend a garment, nor dishevel the hair. Narrated by Abu Dawud with a good chain.

Hadith1666

وعن أبي موسى - ﵁: أنَّ رسُولَ الله - ﷺ - قال: «مَا مِنْ مَيِّتٍ يَمُوتُ فَيَقُومُ بَاكِيهِمْ فَيَقُولُ: وَاجَبَلاَهُ ، واسَيِّدَاهُ، أو نَحْوَ ذلِكَ إلاَّ وُكِّلَ بِهِ مَلَكَانِ يَلْهَزَانِهِ: أهكَذَا كُنْتَ؟». رواه الترمذي، وقال: «حديث حسن». «اللَّهْزُ»: الدَّفْعُ بِجُمْعِ اليَدِ فِي الصَّدْرِ.

From Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no deceased who dies and then his mourner stands up and says: 'O my mountain! O my master!' — or the like of that — except that two angels are appointed over him who buffet him: 'Were you really like that?'" Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, who said: "A good hadith." "al-lahz": striking with the fist on the chest.

Hadith1667

وعن أبي هريرة - ﵁ - قال: قال رسولُ اللهِ - ﷺ: «اثْنَتَانِ فِي النَّاسِ هُمَا بِهِمْ كُفْرٌ: الطَّعْنُ فِي النَّسَبِ، وَالنِّيَاحَةُ عَلَى المَيِّتِ». رواه مسلم.

From Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Two things found among people are, on their part, disbelief: disparaging another's lineage, and wailing over the dead." Narrated by Muslim.
