١٢٧ - باب ما يقوله عند النوم

On the authority of al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ retired to his bed, he would sleep on his right side, then say: "…" [review: the wording of the supplication is garbled and incomplete in the source Arabic («اي أرْسَلْتَ»)]. Narrated by al-Bukhārī with this wording in the Book of Manners (al-Adab) of his Ṣaḥīḥ.

And on his authority, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: "When you come to your bed, perform ablution as you would for prayer, then lie down on your right side and say …" — and he mentioned the like of it, and in it: "And make them the last thing you say." Agreed upon.

And on the authority of ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: The Prophet ﷺ used to pray eleven rakʿahs during the night, and when dawn broke he would pray two light rakʿahs, then he would lie down on his right side until the muezzin came and informed him (of the time of prayer). Agreed upon.

And on the authority of Ḥudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: When the Prophet ﷺ went to his bed at night, he would place his hand under his cheek, then say: "…" and when he awoke he would say: "…" [review: the two supplications are absent from the source Arabic]. Narrated by al-Bukhārī.

And on the authority of Yaʿīsh ibn Ṭikhfah al-Ghifārī (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: My father said: While I was lying on my belly in the mosque, suddenly a man nudged me with his foot and said: "Indeed this is a manner of lying that Allah detests." He said: So I looked, and behold, it was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a sound chain.

And on the authority of Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said: "Whoever sits in a place where he does not remember Allah the Exalted, there shall be upon him from Allah the Exalted a deficiency; and whoever lies down in a place where he does not remember Allah the Exalted, there shall be upon him from Allah a deficiency." Narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a good chain. "Al-tirah": with a kasra on the two-dotted tāʾ (the tāʾ dotted from above), and it means deficiency; and it is also said to mean a liability (consequence).
