١٤١ - باب بيان أن السنة إذا قيل للمستأذن: من أنت؟ أن يقول: فلان، فيسمي نفسه بما يعرف به من اسم أو كنية وكراهة قوله: «أنا» ونحوها

It is reported from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), in his well-known narration about the Night Journey (al-Isrāʾ), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: «Then Jibrīl ascended with me to the lowest heaven and asked for it to be opened. It was said: ‘Who is this?’ He said: ‘Jibrīl.’ It was said: ‘And who is with you?’ He said: ‘Muhammad.’ Then he ascended to the second heaven and asked for it to be opened. It was said: ‘Who is this?’ He said: ‘Jibrīl.’ It was said: ‘And who is with you?’ He said: ‘Muhammad’ — and the third, and the fourth, and all the rest of them. At the gate of every heaven it would be said: ‘Who is this?’ and he would reply: ‘Jibrīl.’» Agreed upon.

It is reported from Abū Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I went out one night, and there was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) walking alone. So I began to walk in the moonlight, and he turned round and saw me, and said: «Who is this?» I said: Abū Dharr. Agreed upon.

It is reported from Umm Hāniʾ (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was bathing and Fāṭimah was screening him. He said: «Who is this?» I said: I am Umm Hāniʾ. Agreed upon.

It is reported from Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and knocked on the door. He said: «Who is this?» I said: It is I. He said: «It is I, it is I!» as though he disliked it. Agreed upon.
