Allah, the Exalted, said:
١٦ - باب في الأمر بالمحافظة على السنة وآدابها
Allah, the Exalted, said:
And what Allāh restored to His Messenger from the people of the towns - it is for Allāh and for the Messenger and for [his] near relatives1 and orphans and the needy and the [stranded] traveler2 - so that it will not be a perpetual distribution among the rich from among you. And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain from. And fear Allāh; indeed, Allāh is severe in penalty.
And Allah, the Exalted, said:
Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination.
And Allah, the Exalted, said:
Say, [O Muḥammad], "If you should love Allāh, then follow me, [so] Allāh will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful."
And Allah, the Exalted, said:
There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allāh an excellent pattern1 for anyone whose hope is in Allāh and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allāh often.
And Allah, the Exalted, said:
But no, by your Lord, they will not [truly] believe until they make you, [O Muḥammad], judge concerning that over which they dispute among themselves and then find within themselves no discomfort from what you have judged and submit in [full, willing] submission.
And Allah, the Exalted, said:
O you who have believed, obey Allāh and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allāh and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allāh and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result.
The scholars said: its meaning is [a reference] to the Book and the Sunnah. And Allah, the Exalted, said:
He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allāh; but those who turn away - We have not sent you over them as a guardian.
And Allah, the Exalted, said:
And thus We have revealed to you an inspiration of Our command [i.e., the Qur’ān]. You did not know what is the Book or [what is] faith, but We have made it a light by which We guide whom We will of Our servants. And indeed, [O Muḥammad], you guide to a straight path -
And Allah, the Exalted, said:
Do not make [your] calling of the Messenger among yourselves as the call of one of you to another. Already Allāh knows those of you who slip away, concealed by others. So let those beware who dissent from his [i.e., the Prophet's] order,1 lest fitnah2 strike them or a painful punishment.
And Allah, the Exalted, said:
And remember what is recited in your houses of the verses of Allāh and wisdom.1 Indeed, Allāh is ever Subtle2 and Aware.
The verses concerning this chapter are many.
As for the hadiths:
The first: From Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: “Leave me with what I have left you. Those before you were destroyed only by their excessive questioning and their disagreeing with their prophets. So when I forbid you something, avoid it, and when I command you to do something, do of it what you are able.” Agreed upon.
The second: From Abū Najīḥ al-ʿIrbāḍ ibn Sāriyah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) admonished us with an admonition so eloquent that hearts trembled at it and eyes shed tears. We said: “O Messenger of Allah, it is as though this were the admonition of one bidding farewell, so counsel us.” He said: “I counsel you to be conscious of Allah, and to hear and obey, even if a slave from Abyssinia is set in authority over you. Whoever among you lives on will see much disagreement, so hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly-guided, well-directed successors; cling to it with your molar teeth. And beware of newly-invented matters, for every innovation is a misguidance.” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A good and sound hadith.” “Al-nawājidh” — with the dotted dhāl — means the canine teeth; and it is also said: the molars.
The third: From Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “All of my Ummah will enter Paradise except those who refuse.” It was said: “And who would refuse, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “Whoever obeys me will enter Paradise, and whoever disobeys me has refused.” Narrated by al-Bukhārī.
The fourth: From Abū Muslim — and it is also said Abū Iyās — Salamah ibn ʿAmr ibn al-Akwaʿ (may Allah be pleased with him): that a man ate in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with his left hand, so he said: “Eat with your right hand.” He said: “I cannot.” He said: “May you never be able!” — nothing prevented him but pride — and he never raised it to his mouth again. Narrated by Muslim.
The fifth: From Abū ʿAbd Allah al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “You shall surely straighten your rows, or else Allah will set your faces at variance.” Agreed upon. In a narration of Muslim: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to straighten our rows as though he were straightening arrow-shafts with them, until he saw that we had grasped it from him. Then one day he came out and stood, and was about to pronounce the takbīr, when he saw a man whose chest was protruding, so he said: “Servants of Allah, you shall surely straighten your rows, or else Allah will set your faces at variance.”
The sixth: From Abū Mūsā (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: A house in Medina burned down upon its occupants during the night. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was told of their case, he said: “This fire is an enemy to you, so when you sleep, put it out.” Agreed upon.
The seventh: From him (Abū Mūsā), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The likeness of the guidance and knowledge with which Allah has sent me is that of abundant rain that fell upon land. Part of it was good ground that absorbed the water and brought forth much herbage and grass. And part of it was hard, barren patches that retained the water, so Allah benefited people by it: they drank, watered their animals, and irrigated their crops. And some of it fell upon another portion, level barren ground that neither holds water nor brings forth herbage. That is the likeness of one who gains understanding in the religion of Allah and benefits from that with which Allah has sent me, so he learns and teaches; and the likeness of one who pays no heed to that and does not accept the guidance of Allah with which I was sent.” Agreed upon. “Faquha” — with a ḍammah on the qāf according to the well-known reading, and it is also said with a kasrah — means: he became a jurist.
The eighth: From Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “My likeness and yours is that of a man who kindled a fire, and the crickets and moths began to fall into it while he tried to drive them away from it. I am taking hold of your waistbands, drawing you back from the Fire, while you slip out of my hands.” Narrated by Muslim. “Al-janādib” are similar to locusts and moths; this is the well-known creature that falls into fire. And “al-ḥujaz” is the plural of ḥujzah, which is the place where the waist-wrapper and the trousers are fastened.
The ninth: From him (Jābir): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the licking of the fingers and the dish, and said: “You do not know in which part of it the blessing lies.” Narrated by Muslim. In another narration of his: “When the morsel of any of you falls, let him pick it up and remove any dirt on it, and let him eat it and not leave it for Satan; and let him not wipe his hand with the napkin until he has licked his fingers, for he does not know in which part of his food the blessing lies.” And in another narration of his: “Satan is present with one of you in everything he does, even attending him at his meal. So when the morsel of any of you falls, let him remove any dirt on it and eat it, and not leave it for Satan.”
The tenth: From Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood among us delivering an admonition, and said: “O people, you will be gathered to Allah the Exalted barefoot, naked and uncircumcised: ‹As We began the first creation, We shall repeat it — a promise binding upon Us; indeed, We shall do it› [al-Anbiyāʾ: 103]. Behold, the first of creation to be clothed on the Day of Resurrection will be Ibrāhīm (peace and blessings be upon him). Behold, men from my Ummah will be brought and taken to the left side, and I will say: O my Lord, my companions! It will be said: You do not know what they introduced after you. Then I will say as the righteous servant said: ‹And I was a witness over them as long as I remained among them› — up to His words — ‹the Almighty, the All-Wise› [al-Māʾidah: 117–118]. Then it will be said to me: They never ceased turning back on their heels from the moment you parted from them.” Agreed upon. “Ghurlan” means: uncircumcised.
The eleventh: From Abū Saʿīd ʿAbd Allah ibn Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade flicking pebbles (al-khadhf), and said: “It does not kill game, nor wound an enemy, but it may put out an eye and break a tooth.” Agreed upon. In another narration: a relative of Ibn Mughaffal flicked pebbles, so he forbade him and said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade flicking pebbles and said: “It does not catch any game.” Then he did it again, so he said: I tell you that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade it, and then you go back to flicking pebbles?! I will never speak to you again.
From ʿĀbis ibn Rabīʿah, who said: I saw ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him) kissing the Stone — meaning the Black Stone — and saying: I know that you are only a stone that can neither benefit nor harm, and had I not seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) kissing you, I would not have kissed you. Agreed upon.
