There has already preceded in these chapters the hadith of Ibn ʿUmar and the hadith of ʿĀʾishah — both of which are sound — that the Prophet ﷺ used to pray two rakʿahs after the maghrib (sunset) prayer.

ʿAbd Allah ibn Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: "Pray before the maghrib (sunset prayer)." On the third time he said: "For whoever wishes." Narrated by al-Bukhārī.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I certainly saw the senior Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ hastening to the pillars [of the mosque] at maghrib (sunset) [to pray]. Narrated by al-Bukhārī.
وعنه، قَالَ: كُنَّا نصلِّي عَلَى عهدِ رسولِ اللهِ - ﷺ - رَكْعَتَيْنِ بَعْدَ غُرُوبِ الشَّمْسِ قَبْلَ المَغْرِبِ، فَقِيلَ: أكَانَ رسولُ الله - ﷺ - صَلاَّهما؟ قَالَ: كَانَ يَرَانَا نُصَلِّيهِمَا فَلَمْ يَأمُرْنَا وَلَمْ يَنْهَنَا. رواه مسلم.
On his authority [Anas], he said: We used to pray, in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, two rakʿahs after the setting of the sun, before the maghrib (sunset prayer). It was asked: Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pray them himself? He said: He used to see us praying them, yet he neither commanded us nor forbade us. Narrated by Muslim.
وعنه، قَالَ: كُنَّا بِالمَدِينَةِ فَإذَا أذَّنَ المُؤَذِّنُ لِصَلاَةِ المَغْرِبِ، ابْتَدَرُوا السَّوَارِيَ، فَرَكَعُوا رَكْعَتَيْنِ، حَتَّى إنَّ الرَّجُلَ الغَريبَ لَيَدْخُلُ المَسْجِدَ فَيَحْسَبُ أنَّ الصَّلاَةَ قَدْ صُلِّيَتْ مِنْ كَثْرَةِ مَنْ يُصَلِّيهِمَا. رواه مسلم.
On his authority [Anas], he said: We were in Medina, and when the muezzin called to the maghrib (sunset) prayer, they would hasten to the pillars [of the mosque] and pray two rakʿahs — so much so that a stranger entering the mosque would suppose that the [obligatory] prayer had already been performed, on account of the great number of those praying them. Narrated by Muslim.
