Allah, the Exalted, said:
٢٨٨ - باب تحريم الرياء
Allah, the Exalted, said:
And they were not commanded except to worship Allāh, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakāh. And that is the correct religion.
And the Exalted said:
O you who have believed, do not invalidate your charities with reminders [of it] or injury as does one who spends his wealth [only] to be seen by the people and does not believe in Allāh and the Last Day. His example is like that of a [large] smooth stone upon which is dust and is hit by a downpour that leaves it bare. They are unable [to keep] anything of what they have earned. And Allāh does not guide the disbelieving people.
And the Exalted also said:
Indeed, the hypocrites [think to] deceive Allāh, but He is deceiving them. And when they stand for prayer, they stand lazily, showing [themselves to] the people and not remembering Allāh except a little,
And on the authority of Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying: "Allah, the Exalted, said: I am the most free of need of any partner from association; whoever does a deed in which he associates another with Me, I abandon him and his association." Muslim narrated it.
And on his authority (Abū Hurayrah), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying: "The first of people against whom judgement will be passed on the Day of Resurrection is a man who was martyred. He will be brought and made to recognise His blessing, and he will recognise it. He will say: What did you do with it? He will say: I fought for Your sake until I was martyred. He will say: You have lied; rather you fought so that it would be said, 'He is brave,' and so it was said. Then it will be commanded concerning him, and he will be dragged on his face until he is cast into the Fire. And a man who acquired knowledge and taught it, and recited the Qurʾān: he will be brought and made to recognise His blessings, and he will recognise them. He will say: What did you do with them? He will say: I acquired knowledge and taught it, and I recited the Qurʾān for Your sake. He will say: You have lied; rather you learned so that it would be said, 'He is a scholar,' and you recited the Qurʾān so that it would be said, 'He is a reciter,' and so it was said. Then it will be commanded concerning him, and he will be dragged on his face until he is cast into the Fire. And a man upon whom Allah bestowed abundance and gave him of all kinds of wealth: he will be brought and made to recognise His blessings, and he will recognise them. He will say: What did you do with them? He will say: I left no path in which You love that wealth be spent except that I spent in it for Your sake. He will say: You have lied; rather you did so that it would be said, 'He is generous,' and so it was said. Then it will be commanded concerning him, and he will be dragged on his face until he is cast into the Fire." Muslim narrated it. «Jarīʾ» — with fatḥah on the jīm, kasrah on the rāʾ, and a long vowel — means: brave and skilful.
And on the authority of Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both): that some people said to him: "We enter upon our rulers and say to them the opposite of what we say once we have left their presence." Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "We used to count this as hypocrisy in the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)." Al-Bukhārī narrated it.
And on the authority of Jundub ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sufyān (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Whoever makes [his deeds] heard for show, Allah will make [his disgrace] heard about him; and whoever acts for show, Allah will expose his showing off." Agreed upon. Muslim also narrated it through the report of Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both). «Sammaʿa» — with a doubled mīm — means: he made his deed apparent to people out of showing off. «Sammaʿa Allāhu bihi» means: He will expose him on the Day of Resurrection. The meaning of «man rāʾā» is: whoever displays a righteous deed to people so as to be magnified in their eyes. «Rāʾā Allāhu bihi» means: He will reveal his inner secret before all creation.
And on the authority of Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Whoever acquires a branch of knowledge by which the Face of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, is to be sought, yet learns it only to attain some worldly gain by it, will not find the fragrance of Paradise on the Day of Resurrection" — meaning its scent. Abū Dāwūd narrated it with a sound chain, and the hadiths in this chapter are many and well-known.
