٣٣٠ - باب كراهة تسمية العنب كرما

It is related from Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Do not call the grapevine al-karm (the noble one), for the truly noble one is the Muslim." Agreed upon, and this is the wording of Muslim. In another narration: "Rather, the truly noble one is the heart of the believer." And in a narration of al-Bukhārī and Muslim: "They call it al-karm (the noble vine); rather, the truly noble one is the heart of the believer."

It is related from Wāʾil ibn Ḥujr (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet ﷺ that he said: "Do not say al-karm (the noble one); rather say al-ʿinab (the grapes) and al-ḥabalah (the vine)." Reported by Muslim. "Al-ḥabalah" is pronounced with a fatḥah on the ḥāʾ and the bāʾ, and it is also said with a sukūn on the bāʾ.
