227 - Chapter on the merit of fasting the Day of Arafah, ʿĀshūrāʾ, and Tāsūʿāʾ.

٢٢٧ - باب فضل صوم يوم عرفة وعاشوراء وتاسوعاء

On the authority of Abū Qatādah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about fasting the Day of Arafah, and he said: "It expiates [the sins of] the past year and the coming year." Narrated by Muslim.

On the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both): that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fasted the Day of ʿĀshūrāʾ and ordered that it be fasted. Agreed upon.
وعن أَبي قتادة - ﵁: أنَّ رسول الله - ﷺ - سُئِلَ عَنْ صِيامِ يَوْمِ عَاشُوراءَ، فَقَالَ: «يُكَفِّرُ السَّنَةَ المَاضِيَةَ». رواه مسلم.

وعن ابن عباس ﵄، قَالَ: قَالَ رسول الله - ﷺ: «لَئِنْ بَقِيتُ إِلَى قَابلٍ لأَصُومَنَّ التَّاسِعَ». رواه مسلم.
On the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If I live until next year, I shall surely fast the ninth [of Muḥarram]." Narrated by Muslim.
