On the authority of Jabala bin Suhaym, who said: A year of drought befell us while we were with Ibn al-Zubayr, and we were provided with dates. ʿAbd Allah bin ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to pass by us while we were eating, and he would say: "Do not eat them two at a time, for the Prophet ﷺ forbade pairing." Then he would add: "unless a man asks the permission of his brother." Agreed upon.
