١٠٤ - باب الأكل مما يليه ووعظه وتأديبه من يسيء أكله

From ʿUmar ibn Abī Salamah (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: I was a boy under the care of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and my hand used to roam about in the dish. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O boy, mention the name of Allah the Exalted, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is nearest to you." Agreed upon (al-Bukhārī and Muslim). His words "taṭīsh" — with a kasrah on the ṭāʾ, followed by a yāʾ with two dots beneath — mean: it moves about and reaches out towards the various sides of the dish.

And from Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ (may Allah be pleased with him): that a man ate in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with his left hand, so he said: "Eat with your right hand." The man said: "I cannot." He said: "May you never be able to!" — nothing prevented him but arrogance. Thereafter he never raised it to his mouth. Reported by Muslim.
