١٤٤ - باب عيادة المريض

On the authority of al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us with seven things: visiting the sick, following the funeral, responding to the one who sneezes, fulfilling the oath of the one who swears, helping the wronged, answering the one who invites, and spreading the salām. Agreed upon.

And on the authority of Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The right of a Muslim upon a Muslim is five: returning the salām, visiting the sick, following the funerals, answering the invitation, and responding to the one who sneezes." Agreed upon.

And on his authority, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will say on the Day of Resurrection: O son of Adam, I fell ill and you did not visit Me! He will say: O my Lord, how could I visit You when You are the Lord of the worlds? He will say: Did you not know that My servant so-and-so fell ill, yet you did not visit him? Did you not know that, had you visited him, you would have found Me with him? O son of Adam, I asked you for food and you did not feed Me! He will say: O my Lord, how could I feed You when You are the Lord of the worlds? He will say: Did you not know that My servant so-and-so asked you for food, yet you did not feed him? Did you not know that, had you fed him, you would have found that with Me? O son of Adam, I asked you for drink and you did not give Me to drink! He will say: O my Lord, how could I give You to drink when You are the Lord of the worlds? He will say: My servant so-and-so asked you for drink, yet you did not give him to drink. Did you not know that, had you given him to drink, you would have found that with Me?" Narrated by Muslim.

And on the authority of Abū Mūsā (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Visit the sick, feed the hungry, and free the captive." Narrated by al-Bukhārī. "al-ʿānī": the captive.

And on the authority of Thawbān (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: "When a Muslim visits his sick Muslim brother, he remains amid the harvest of Paradise until he returns." It was said: O Messenger of Allah, what is the harvest of Paradise? He said: "Its gathered fruit." Narrated by Muslim.

And on the authority of ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "There is no Muslim who visits a Muslim in the morning but that seventy thousand angels pray for him until evening, and if he visits him in the evening, seventy thousand angels pray for him until morning, and he will have a harvest of fruit in Paradise." Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, who said: "a good (ḥasan) hadith." "al-kharīf": the plucked fruit, that is, that which is gathered.

And on the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: There was a Jewish boy who used to serve the Prophet ﷺ. He fell ill, so the Prophet ﷺ came to visit him. He sat by his head and said to him: "Accept Islam." The boy looked towards his father, who was beside him, and he said: Obey Abū al-Qāsim. So he accepted Islam. The Prophet ﷺ went out saying: "Praise be to Allah, who saved him from the Fire." Narrated by al-Bukhārī.
