Chapter 119: On the description of the length of the shirt, the sleeve, the lower garment, and the end of the turban; the prohibition of letting any of that trail out of arrogance, and its being disliked when not out of arrogance.
From Asmāʾ bint Yazīd al-Anṣāriyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: The sleeve of the shirt of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reached to the wrist. Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A good (ḥasan) hadith.”
And from Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both): that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever drags his garment out of arrogance, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection.” Abū Bakr said: “O Messenger of Allah, my lower garment slips down unless I keep attending to it.” So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: “You are not one of those who do it out of arrogance.” Narrated by al-Bukhārī, and Muslim narrated part of it.
And from Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Allah will not look, on the Day of Resurrection, at one who drags his lower garment out of conceit.” Agreed upon.
And from him, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: “Whatever of the lower garment is below the ankles is in the Fire.” Narrated by al-Bukhārī.
And from Abū Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: “There are three to whom Allah will not speak on the Day of Resurrection, nor look at them, nor purify them, and for them is a painful punishment.” He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited it three times. Abū Dharr said: “May they be ruined and lost! Who are they, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “The one who lets his garment trail, the one who reminds others of his favours, and the one who sells his goods with a false oath.” Narrated by Muslim. And in another narration of his: “The one who lets his lower garment trail.”
And from Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: “Letting trail may concern the lower garment, the shirt, and the turban. Whoever drags any of them out of arrogance, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection.” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Nasāʾī with a sound chain.
And from Abū Jurayy Jābir ibn Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I saw a man whose opinion people deferred to; he would not say anything but that they accepted it from him. I said: “Who is this?” They said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).” I said: “Upon you be peace, O Messenger of Allah” — twice. He said: “Do not say, ‘Upon you be peace,’ for ‘Upon you be peace’ is the greeting of the dead; say: ‘Peace be upon you.’” He said: I said: “Are you the Messenger of Allah?” He said: “I am the Messenger of Allah, the One whom, when harm befalls you and you call upon Him, removes it from you; and when a year of drought befalls you and you call upon Him, makes growth spring up for you; and when you are in a barren land or a desert and your mount is lost and you call upon Him, He returns it to you.” He said: I said: “Give me a covenant to keep.” He said: “Do not abuse anyone.” He said: So I never abused anyone after that, neither a free man, nor a slave, nor a camel, nor a sheep. “And do not belittle any act of kindness, and that you speak to your brother with a cheerful face towards him — that is part of kindness. Raise your lower garment to mid-shin, and if you refuse, then to the ankles; and beware of letting the lower garment trail, for it is a form of conceit, and Allah does not love conceit. And if a man insults you and reproaches you with what he knows about you, do not reproach him with what you know about him, for the burden of that will fall only upon him.” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī with a sound chain, and al-Tirmidhī said: “A good and sound (ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ) hadith.”
And from Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: While a man was praying with his lower garment trailing, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: “Go and perform ablution.” So he went and performed ablution, then came back, and he said: “Go and perform ablution.” A man said to him: “O Messenger of Allah, why did you order him to perform ablution and then say nothing to him?” He said: “He was praying while letting his lower garment trail, and Allah does not accept the prayer of a man who lets his garment trail.” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a sound chain meeting the conditions of Muslim.
And from Qays ibn Bishr al-Taghlibī, who said: My father — who was a companion of Abū al-Dardāʾ — informed me, saying: There was in Damascus a man among the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sahl ibn al-Ḥanẓaliyyah, and he was a solitary man who seldom sat with people; he was constantly in prayer, and when he finished he was occupied with glorification and magnification of Allah until he went home. He once passed by us while we were with Abū al-Dardāʾ, and Abū al-Dardāʾ said to him: “A word that will benefit us and not harm you.” He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) dispatched a raiding party, and it returned. A man from among them came and sat in the gathering where the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to sit, and he said to a man beside him: “If only you had seen us when we met the enemy: so-and-so charged and thrust with his spear, and said, ‘Take that from me, and I am the young man of Ghifār!’ What do you think of his words?” He said: “I think his reward has been nullified.” Another man heard that and said: “I see no harm in it.” So they disputed until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard them, and he said: “Glory be to Allah! There is no harm in his being rewarded and praised.” I saw Abū al-Dardāʾ delighted at this, raising his head towards him and saying: “Did you yourself hear that from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?” He kept saying “Yes,” and Abū al-Dardāʾ kept making him repeat it until I thought he would kneel down upon his knees. He said: Then he passed by us on another day, and Abū al-Dardāʾ said to him: “A word that will benefit us and not harm you.” He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to us: “One who spends on horses (for Allah’s cause) is like one who stretches out his hand with charity, never withholding it.” Then he passed by us on another day, and Abū al-Dardāʾ said to him: “A word that will benefit us and not harm you.” He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “What an excellent man is Khuraym al-Asadī! Were it not for the length of his hair and the trailing of his lower garment!” That reached Khuraym, so he hurried and took a blade and cut his hair with it to his ears, and raised his lower garment to mid-shin. Then he passed by us on another day, and Abū al-Dardāʾ said to him: “A word that will benefit us and not harm you.” He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “You are going to meet your brethren, so put your saddles in good order and put your dress in good order, until you are like a beauty-spot among the people; for Allah does not love coarseness nor coarse speech.” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a good chain, except that as for Qays ibn Bishr, they differed over whether he is reliable or weak; and Muslim narrated from him.
And from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The lower garment of the Muslim should reach to mid-shin, and there is no harm — or no blame — in what is between that and the ankles; but whatever is below the ankles is in the Fire; and whoever drags his lower garment out of conceit, Allah will not look at him.” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a sound chain.
And from Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: I passed by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while there was a slackness in my lower garment, and he said: “O ʿAbd Allah, raise your lower garment.” So I raised it. Then he said: “Raise it more.” So I raised it more, and I have continued to be mindful of that ever since. Some of the people said: “To where?” He said: “To mid-shin.” Narrated by Muslim.
On his authority, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever drags his garment out of vanity, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection." Umm Salamah said: How, then, are women to manage their hems? He said: "Let them lower them a hand-span." She said: But then their feet would be exposed. He said: "Then let them lower it a forearm's length, and not exceed that." Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī narrated it, and (al-Tirmidhī) said: "A good and sound hadith."
