From ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: Some people asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about soothsayers, and he said: «They are nothing.» They said: O Messenger of Allah, they sometimes tell us something and it comes true? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: «That word from the truth is snatched by the jinn, who casts it into the ear of his ally; then they mix with it a hundred lies.» Agreed upon (al-Bukhārī and Muslim). In a narration of al-Bukhārī from ʿĀʾishah: that she heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: «The angels descend in the low sky — and it is the cloud — and mention the matter decreed in heaven; then Satan eavesdrops on the hearing, hears it, and inspires it to the soothsayers, who then lie along with it a hundred lies from themselves.» His words «fa-yaqurruhā» are with fatḥah on the yāʾ and ḍammah on the qāf and rāʾ, meaning: he casts it; and «al-ʿanān» with fatḥah on the ʿayn.

From Ṣafiyyah bint Abī ʿUbayd, from one of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) — may Allah be pleased with her — from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: «Whoever goes to a fortune-teller and asks him about something and believes him, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days.» Narrated by Muslim.

From Qabīṣah ibn al-Mukhāriq (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: «Divination by lines, augury by birds, and bird-scaring are from sorcery.» Narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a chain that is good (ḥasan). He said: «al-ṭarq» is al-zajr — meaning scaring birds; that one takes a good omen or a bad omen from its flight: if it flies to the right he takes a good omen, and if it flies to the left he takes a bad omen. Abū Dāwūd said: «al-ʿiyāfah»: line-drawing. Al-Jawharī said in al-Ṣiḥāḥ: al-jibt is a word that applies to the idol, the soothsayer, the sorcerer, and the like.
وعن ابن عباس ﵄، قال: قال رسولُ الله - ﷺ: «مَنِ اقْتَبَسَ عِلْمًا مِنَ النُّجُوم ، اقْتَبَسَ شُعْبَةً مِنَ السِّحْرِ زَادَ مَا زَادَ». رواه أبو داود بإسناد صحيح.
From Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: «Whoever acquires knowledge of the stars has acquired a branch of sorcery — an increase for every increase.» Narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a chain that is sound (ṣaḥīḥ).
وعن مُعاوِيَةَ بنِ الحَكَمِ - ﵁ - قال: قلتُ: يا رسُولَ اللهِ إنِّي حديثُ عَهْدٍ بالجاهِليَّةِ، وَقَدْ جَاءَ اللهُ تَعَالَى بالإسْلاَمِ، وإنَّ مِنَّا رِجَالًا يَأتُونَ الكُهَّانَ؟ قال: «فَلاَ تأتِهِمْ» قُلْتُ: وَمِنَّا رِجَالٌ يَتَطَيَّرُونَ؟ قَالَ: «ذَلِكَ شَيْءٌ يَجِدُونَهُ فِي صُدُورِهِمْ، فَلاَ يَصُدُّهُمْ» قُلْتُ: وَمِنَّا رِجَالٌ يَخُطُّونَ؟ قَالَ: «كَانَ نَبِيٌّ مِنَ الأنْبِيَاءِ يَخُطُّ، فَمَنْ وَافَقَ خَطَّهُ، فَذَاكَ». رواه مسلم.
From Muʿāwiyah ibn al-Ḥakam (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, I am newly come from the pre-Islamic era, and Allah the Exalted has brought Islam; and among us are men who visit soothsayers? He said: «Then do not visit them.» I said: And among us are men who take omens from birds? He said: «That is something they find in their hearts; let it not turn them back.» I said: And among us are men who draw lines? He said: «There was a prophet among the prophets who drew lines; whoever matches his line, that is his.» Narrated by Muslim.
وعن أَبي مَسعودٍ البدريِّ - ﵁: أنَّ رسُولَ اللهِ - ﷺ - نَهَى عَنْ ثَمَنِ الكَلْبِ ، وَمَهْرِ البَغِيِّ ، وَحُلْوَانِ الكاهِنِ . متفق عَلَيْهِ.
From Abū Masʿūd al-Badrī (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the price of a dog, the earnings of a prostitute, and the fee of a soothsayer. Agreed upon (al-Bukhārī and Muslim).
