From Sahl ibn Saʿd (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The people will remain in a state of good so long as they hasten to break the fast.” Agreed upon (al-Bukhārī and Muslim).

From Abū ʿAṭiyya, who said: Masrūq and I went in to ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her), and Masrūq said to her: There are two men among the Companions of Muḥammad ﷺ, neither of whom falls short in seeking good; one of them hastens the Maghrib prayer and the breaking of the fast, while the other delays the Maghrib prayer and the breaking of the fast. She said: Who is it that hastens the Maghrib prayer and the breaking of the fast? He said: ʿAbd Allāh — meaning Ibn Masʿūd. She said: This is how the Messenger of Allah used to do it. Narrated by Muslim. His statement “lā yaʾlū” means: he does not fall short in [seeking] good.

From Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: The most beloved of My servants to Me are the quickest of them to break the fast.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A good (ḥasan) ḥadīth.”
وعن عمر بن الخطاب - ﵁ - قَالَ: قَالَ رسولُ الله - ﷺ: «إِذَا أقْبَلَ اللَّيْلُ مِنْ هاهُنَا، وَأدْبَرَ النهارُ مِنْ هَاهُنَا، وَغَرَبَتِ الشَّمْسُ، فَقَدْ أفْطَر الصَّائِمُ». متفقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
From ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “When the night approaches from here, and the day retreats from here, and the sun has set, then the fasting person has broken his fast.” Agreed upon (al-Bukhārī and Muslim).
وعن أَبي إبراهيم عبدِ الله بنِ أَبي أوفى ﵄، قَالَ: سِرْنَا مَعَ رسولِ الله - ﷺ - وَهُوَ صَائِمٌ، فَلَمَّا غَرَبَتِ الشَّمْسُ، قَالَ لِبَعْضِ القَوْمِ: «يَا فُلاَنُ انْزِلْ فَاجْدَحْ لَنَا»، فَقَالَ: يَا رسول الله، لَوْ أمْسَيْتَ؟ قَالَ: «انْزِلْ فَاجْدَحْ لَنَا» قَالَ: إنَّ عَلَيْكَ نَهَارًا ، قَالَ: «انْزِلْ فَاجْدَحْ لَنَا» قَالَ: فَنَزَلَ فَجَدَحَ لَهُمْ فَشَرِبَ رسولُ الله - ﷺ - ثُمَّ قَالَ: «إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ اللَّيْلَ قَدْ أقْبَلَ مِنْ هاهُنَا، فَقَدْ أفْطَرَ الصَّائِمُ» وَأشَارَ بِيَدِهِ قِبَلَ المَشْرِقِ. متفقٌ عَلَيْهِ. قَوْله: «اجْدَحْ» بِجيم ثُمَّ دال ثُمَّ حاءٍ مهملتين، أيْ: اخْلِطِ السَّويقَ بِالمَاءِ.
From Abū Ibrāhīm ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Awfā (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: We were travelling with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was fasting, and when the sun set he said to one of the company: “O so-and-so, dismount and mix some drink for us.” The man said: O Messenger of Allah, would you not wait until evening? He said: “Dismount and mix some drink for us.” The man said: There is still daylight upon you. He said: “Dismount and mix some drink for us.” So he dismounted and mixed a drink for them, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ drank, then said: “When you see that the night has approached from here, then the fasting person has broken his fast,” and he pointed with his hand towards the east. Agreed upon (al-Bukhārī and Muslim). His word “ijdaḥ” — with a jīm, then a dāl, then a ḥāʾ, the latter two being unpointed — means: mix the parched-barley meal (sawīq) with water.
وعن سلمان بن عامر الضَّبِّيِّ الصحابي - ﵁ - عن النبيِّ - ﷺ - قَالَ: «إِذَا أفْطَرَ أحَدُكُمْ، فَلْيُفْطِرْ عَلَى تَمْرٍ، فَإنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ، فَلْيُفْطِرْ عَلَى مَاءٍ؛ فإنَّهُ طَهُورٌ». رواه أَبُو داود والترمذي، وقال: «حديث حسن صحيح».
From Salmān ibn ʿĀmir al-Ḍabbī, the Companion (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “When one of you breaks his fast, let him break it with dates; and if he does not find any, then let him break it with water, for it is purifying.” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A good and sound (ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ) ḥadīth.”
وعن أنس - ﵁ - قَالَ: كَانَ رسولُ الله - ﷺ - يُفْطِرُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُصَلِّي عَلَى رُطَبَاتٍ، فَإنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ رُطَبَاتٌ فَتُمَيْرَاتٌ، فَإنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ تُمَيْرَاتٌ حَسَا حَسَوَاتٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ. رواه أَبُو داود والترمذي، وقال: «حديث حسن».
From Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to break his fast, before praying, with fresh dates; and if there were no fresh dates, then with a few dried dates; and if there were no dried dates, he would take a few sips of water. Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A good (ḥasan) ḥadīth.”
