Hadith1082

﵄، - ﷺ -

Jābir ibn Samura (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us and said, "Will you not form your rows as the angels form their rows before their Lord?" We said, "O Messenger of Allah, how do the angels form their rows before their Lord?" He said, "They complete the front rows and pack themselves closely together in the row." Narrated by Muslim.

Hadith1083

- ﵁: - ﷺ -

Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "If people knew what reward lies in the call to prayer and the first row, and then found no other way to obtain it except by drawing lots for it, they would surely draw lots." Agreed upon (al-Bukhārī and Muslim).

Hadith1084

- ﷺ:

He also reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "The best of the men's rows is the first of them and the worst of them is the last; and the best of the women's rows is the last of them and the worst of them is the first." Narrated by Muslim.

Hadith1085

وعن أبي سعيد الخدرِيِّ - ﵁: أنَّ رَسُول اللهِ - ﷺ - رأى في أصْحَابِهِ تَأَخُّرًا، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ: «تَقَدَّمُوا فَأتَمُّوا بِي، وَلْيَأتَمَّ بِكُمْ مَنْ بَعْدَكُمْ، لاَ يَزَالُ قَوْمٌ يَتَأَخَّرُونَ حَتَّى يُؤَخِّرَهُمُ الله». رواه مُسلِم.

Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) noticed that his Companions tended to hang back, so he said to them, "Come forward and follow me, and let those behind you follow you. A people will keep hanging back until Allah puts them back." Narrated by Muslim.

Hadith1086

وعن أبي مسعود - ﵁ - قال: كَانَ رَسُول اللهِ - ﷺ - يَمْسَحُ مَنَاكِبَنَا في الصَّلاَةِ، وَيَقُولُ: «اسْتَووا ولاَ تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ، لِيَلِيَنِي مِنْكُمْ أُولُو الأحْلاَمِ وَالنُّهَى ، ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ، ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ» رَوَاهُ مُسلِم.

Abū Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to stroke our shoulders before the prayer and say, "Keep your rows even and do not differ, lest your hearts differ. Let those of you who are mature and discerning stand next to me, then those who come after them, then those who come after them." Narrated by Muslim.

Hadith1087

وعن أنس - ﵁ - قَالَ: قال رَسُولُ اللهِ - ﷺ: «سَوُّوا صُفُوفَكُمْ؛ فَإنَّ تَسْوِيَةَ الصَّفِّ مِنْ تَمَامِ الصَّلاَةِ». متفقٌ عَلَيهِ. وفي رواية للبخاري: «فَإنَّ تَسْوِيَةَ الصُّفُوفِ مِنْ إقَامَةِ الصَّلاَةِ».

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Straighten your rows, for straightening the row is part of the perfection of the prayer." Agreed upon (al-Bukhārī and Muslim). In a narration of al-Bukhārī: "For straightening the rows is part of the proper establishment of the prayer."

Hadith1088

وعنه، قَالَ: أُقِيمَتِ الصَّلاَةُ فَأقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ - ﷺ - بِوَجْهِهِ، فَقَالَ: «أقِيمُوا صُفُوفَكُمْ وَتَرَاصُّوا؛ فَإنِّي أرَاكُمْ مِنْ وَرَاءِ ظَهْرِي». رواه البُخَارِيُّ بلفظه، ومسلم بمعناه. وفي رواية للبخاري: وَكَانَ أَحَدُنَا يُلْزِقُ مَنْكِبَهُ بِمَنْكِبِ صَاحِبِهِ وَقَدَمَهُ بِقَدَمِهِ.

He also reported: The iqāmah for the prayer was called, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his face towards us and said, "Straighten your rows and pack closely together, for I see you from behind my back." Narrated by al-Bukhārī in these words, and by Muslim in its meaning. In a narration of al-Bukhārī: Each one of us used to press his shoulder against his companion's shoulder and his foot against his foot.

Hadith1089

وعن النعمان بن بشير ﵄، قَالَ: سمعت رَسُول اللهِ - ﷺ - يقول: «لَتُسَوُّنَّ صُفُوفَكُمْ، أوْ لَيُخَالِفَنَّ اللَّهُ بَيْنَ وُجُوهِكُمْ». متفقٌ عَلَيهِ. وفي رواية لمسلم: أنَّ رَسُول اللهِ - ﷺ - كَانَ يُسَوِّي صُفُوفَنَا، حَتَّى كَأنَّمَا يُسَوِّي بِهَا القِدَاحَ حَتَّى رَأى أنَّا قَدْ عَقَلْنَا عَنْهُ، ثُمَّ خَرَجَ يَومًا فَقَامَ حَتَّى كَادَ يُكَبِّرُ، فَرَأى رَجُلًا بَادِيًا صَدْرُهُ مِنَ الصَّفِّ، فَقَالَ: «عِبَادَ اللهِ، لتُسَوُّنَّ صُفُوفَكُمْ، أو لَيُخَالِفَنَّ اللهُ بَيْنَ وُجُوهِكُمْ».

Al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, "You shall surely straighten your rows, or Allah will surely set your faces in opposition to one another." Agreed upon (al-Bukhārī and Muslim). In a narration of Muslim: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to straighten our rows until it was as though he were straightening arrow-shafts with them, until he saw that we had grasped this from him. Then one day he came out and stood, and was about to say the takbīr, when he saw a man whose chest was protruding from the row, so he said, "Servants of Allah, you shall surely straighten your rows, or Allah will surely set your faces in opposition to one another."

Hadith1090

وعن البراءِ بن عازِبٍ ﵄، قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُول اللهِ - ﷺ - يَتَخَلَّلُ الصَّفَّ مِنْ نَاحِيَةٍ إلى نَاحِيَةٍ، يَمْسَحُ صُدُورَنَا وَمَنَاكِبَنَا، وَيَقُولُ: «لا تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ» وكانَ يَقُولُ: «إنَّ اللهَ وَمَلائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى الصُّفُوفِ الأُوَلِ». رواه أبُو دَاوُدَ بإسناد حسن.

Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pass through the row from one side to the other, stroking our chests and our shoulders, and saying, "Do not differ, lest your hearts differ." And he used to say, "Indeed Allah and His angels send blessings upon the front rows." Narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a good (ḥasan) chain.

Hadith1091

وعن ابن عمر ﵄: أنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ - ﷺ - قَالَ: «أقيمُوا الصُّفُوفَ، وَحَاذُوا بَيْنَ المَنَاكِبِ، وَسُدُّوا الخَلَلَ، وَلِينوا بِأيْدِي إخْوانِكُمْ، ولاَ تَذَرُوا فُرُجَاتٍ للشَّيْطَانِ، وَمَنْ وَصَلَ صَفًّا وَصَلَهُ اللهُ، وَمَنْ قَطَعَ صَفًّا قَطَعَهُ اللهُ». رواه أبُو دَاوُدَ بإسناد صحيح.

Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Straighten the rows, align the shoulders, close the gaps, be yielding in the hands of your brothers, and do not leave openings for the devil. Whoever joins a row, Allah will join him; and whoever cuts off a row, Allah will cut him off." Narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a sound (ṣaḥīḥ) chain.

Hadith1092

وعن أنس - ﵁: أنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ - ﷺ - قَالَ: «رُصُّوا صُفُوفَكُمْ، وَقَارِبُوا بَيْنَهَا، وَحَاذُوا بِالأعْنَاقِ ؛ فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ إنِّي لأَرَى الشَّيْطَانَ يَدْخُلُ مِنْ خَلَلِ الصَّفِّ، كَأَنَّهَا الحَذَفُ» حديث صحيح رَوَاهُ أبُو دَاوُدَ بإسنادٍ عَلَى شرط مسلم. «الحَذَفُ» بحاء مهملةٍ وذالٍ معجمة مفتوحتين ثُمَّ فاء وهي: غَنَمٌ سُودٌ صِغَارٌ تَكُونُ بِاليَمَنِ.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Pack your rows closely, draw them near to one another, and align the necks. By the One in whose hand my soul is, I see the devil entering through the gaps in the row as though they were small black sheep." A sound (ṣaḥīḥ) hadith narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a chain meeting the conditions of Muslim. "Al-ḥadhaf" is spelt with an unpointed ḥāʾ and a pointed dhāl, both with a fatḥah, then a fāʾ; it means small black sheep found in Yemen.

Hadith1093

وعنه: أنَّ رَسُول اللهِ - ﷺ - قَالَ: «أتِمُّوا الصَّفَّ المُقَدَّمَ، ثُمَّ الَّذِي يَلِيهِ، فَمَا كَانَ مِنْ نَقْصٍ فَلْيَكُنْ في الصَّفِّ المُؤَخَّرِ». رواه أبُو دَاوُدَ بإسناد حسن.

He also reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Complete the front row, then the one that follows it; and whatever shortfall there is, let it be in the rearmost row." Narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a good (ḥasan) chain.

Hadith1094

وعن عائشة ﵂، قالت: قال رَسُول اللهِ - ﷺ: «إنَّ اللهَ وَمَلاَئِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى مَيَامِنِ الصُّفُوفِ». رواه أبُو دَاوُدَ بإسنادٍ عَلَى شرط مسلم، وفيه رجل مُخْتَلَفٌ في تَوثِيقِهِ.

From ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Indeed Allah and His angels send blessings upon those on the right sides of the rows." Narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a chain meeting the conditions of Muslim, though it contains a man whose reliability is disputed.

Hadith1095

وعن البراء - ﵁ - قَالَ: كُنَّا إذَا صَلَّيْنَا خَلْفَ رَسُول اللهِ - ﷺ - أحْبَبْنَا أَنْ نَكُونَ عَنْ يَمِينهِ، يُقْبِلُ عَلَيْنَا بِوَجْهِهِ، فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ: «رَبِّ قِني عَذَابَكَ يَوْمَ تَبْعَثُ - أو تَجْمَعُ - عِبَادَكَ». رواه مُسلِمٌ.

From al-Barāʾ (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: When we prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we loved to be on his right side, for he would turn his face towards us. I heard him say: "My Lord, shield me from Your punishment on the Day You raise up — or gather — Your servants." Narrated by Muslim.

Hadith1096

وعن أبي هريرة - ﵁ - قَالَ: قال رَسُول اللهِ - ﷺ: «وَسِّطُوا الإمَامَ، وَسُدُّوا الخَلَلَ». رواه أبُو دَاوُد.

From Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Place the imam in the middle, and fill the gaps." Narrated by Abū Dāwūd.
