٢٥٠ - باب الأمر بالدعاء وفضله وبيان جمل من أدعيته - ﷺ.

And on the authority of al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr (may Allah be pleased with them both), from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “Supplication is worship itself.” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A good and sound ḥadīth.”

And on the authority of ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to favour the comprehensive forms of supplication, and he would leave aside all else. Narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a good chain of narration.

And on the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The most frequent supplication of the Prophet ﷺ was: [the wording of the supplication is not present in the source] [review: supplication text missing from source]. Agreed upon. Muslim added in his narration: And whenever Anas wished to make a particular supplication, he would supplicate with it; and whenever he wished to make a supplication, he would include it within it.

And on the authority of Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Prophet ﷺ used to say: [the wording of the supplication is not present in the source] [review: supplication text missing from source]. Narrated by Muslim.

And on the authority of Ṭāriq ibn Ashyam (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: When a man embraced Islam, the Prophet ﷺ would teach him the prayer, then command him to supplicate with these words: “[the wording of the supplication is not present in the source]” [review: supplication text missing from source]. Narrated by Muslim. And in another narration of his, on the authority of Ṭāriq: that he heard the Prophet ﷺ, and a man came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, how should I say [it] when I ask my Lord? He said: “Say: [the wording is not present in the source], for these [words] gather together for you your worldly life and your Hereafter.”

And on the authority of ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: [the wording is not present in the source] [review: text missing from source]. Narrated by Muslim.

And on the authority of Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “Seek refuge in Allah.” Agreed upon. And in another narration Sufyān said: I doubt that I added one of them myself.

And on his authority [Abū Hurayrah], who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say: [the wording of the supplication is not present in the source] [review: supplication text missing from source]. Narrated by Muslim.

From ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: "Say: O Allah, guide me and keep me on the straight path." And in another narration: [review: variant wording absent from source]. Narrated by Muslim.

From Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say: [review: supplication text absent from source]. And in another narration: "…and the burden of debt and being overpowered by men." Narrated by Muslim.

From Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq (may Allah be pleased with him), that he said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: "Teach me a supplication that I may say in my prayer." He said: "Say: [review: supplication text absent from source]." Agreed upon. In one narration: "and in my home." It is also narrated as "wrong much" (ẓulman kathīran), and narrated as "great" (kabīran) — the former with the three-dotted thāʾ and the latter with the single-dotted bāʾ; so the two should be combined and one should say: "much and great" (kathīran kabīran).

From Abū Mūsā (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet ﷺ, that he used to make this supplication: "[review: opening of supplication garbled in source] …and what I have made public, and what You know better than I. You are the One who brings forward and You are the One who puts back, and You have power over all things." Agreed upon.

From ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Prophet ﷺ used to say in his supplication: [review: supplication text absent from source]. Narrated by Muslim.

From Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: Among the supplications of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was: [review: supplication text absent from source]. Narrated by Muslim.

From Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say: "[review: opening of supplication missing — '…from knowledge that does not'] benefit; and from a heart that is not humble, and from a soul that is never satisfied, and from a supplication that is not answered." Narrated by Muslim.

From Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say: "[review: opening of supplication missing] …except You." Some of the narrators added: "and there is no might nor power except with Allah." Agreed upon.

From ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Prophet ﷺ used to supplicate with these words: [review: supplication text absent from source]. Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who said: "A good and sound ḥadīth"; and this is the wording of Abū Dāwūd.

From Ziyād ibn ʿIlāqah, from his uncle — who is Quṭbah ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) — who said: The Prophet ﷺ used to say: [review: supplication text absent from source]. Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, who said: "A good ḥadīth."

From Shakal ibn Ḥumayd (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, teach me a supplication." He said: "Say: [review: supplication text absent from source]." Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who said: "A good ḥadīth."

From Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet ﷺ used to say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from leucoderma (baraṣ), insanity, leprosy (juḏām), and evil diseases." Narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a sound chain.

From Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say: [review: the supplication itself is missing from the Arabic source]. Narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a sound chain.

From ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him): that a contracted slave (mukātab) came to him and said: I am unable to meet my manumission contract, so help me. He said: Shall I not teach you words that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me? Were a debt as great as a mountain upon you, Allah would settle it for you. Say: [review: the supplication itself is missing from the Arabic source]. Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A good (ḥasan) hadith.”

From ʿImrān ibn al-Ḥuṣayn (may Allah be pleased with them both): that the Prophet ﷺ taught his father, Ḥuṣayn, two phrases with which to supplicate: [review: the two phrases are missing from the Arabic source]. Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A good (ḥasan) hadith.”

From Abū al-Faḍl al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, teach me something to ask Allah, the Exalted, for. He said: “Ask Allah for well-being.” So I waited some days, then I came and said: O Messenger of Allah, teach me something to ask Allah, the Exalted, for. He said to me: “O ʿAbbās, O uncle of the Messenger of Allah, ask Allah for well-being in this world and the Hereafter.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A good and sound (ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ) hadith.”

From Shahr ibn Ḥawshab, who said: I said to Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her): O Mother of the Believers, what was the supplication the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made most often when he was with you? She said: His most frequent supplication was: [review: the supplication itself is missing from the Arabic source]. Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A good (ḥasan) hadith.”

From Abū al-Dardāʾ (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Among the supplications of Dāwūd was: [review: the supplication itself is missing from the Arabic source].” Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A good (ḥasan) hadith.”

From Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Cleave persistently to [review: the words to be repeated are missing from the Arabic source].” Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, and al-Nasāʾī narrated it through the report of the Companion Rabīʿah ibn ʿĀmir. Al-Ḥākim said: “A hadith with a sound chain.” [The word] aliẓẓū — with a kasrah on the lām and a doubling of the pointed ẓāʾ — means: keep constantly to this supplication and say it abundantly.

From Abū Umāmah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made a lengthy supplication, of which we retained nothing. We said: O Messenger of Allah, you made a lengthy supplication of which we retained nothing. So he said: “Shall I not direct you to what gathers all of that together? You say: [review: the Arabic here is corrupt — only the fragment ‘… except by Allah’ survives] … except by Allah.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A good (ḥasan) hadith.”

From Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: Among the supplications of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was: [review: the supplication itself is missing from the Arabic source]. Narrated by al-Ḥākim Abū ʿAbd Allāh, who said: “A sound hadith according to the standard of Muslim.”
