Allah the Exalted said:
رياض الصالحينAbū Zakariyyā Muḥyī al-Dīn Yaḥyā ibn Sharaf al-Nawawī٨٦ - باب الوفاء بالعهد وإنجاز الوعد
٨٦ - باب الوفاء بالعهد وإنجاز الوعد
And do not approach the property of an orphan, except in the way that is best,1 until he reaches maturity. And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.
And He the Exalted said:
وَأَوْفُوا۟ بِعَهْدِ ٱللَّهِ إِذَا عَـٰهَدتُّمْ وَلَا تَنقُضُوا۟ ٱلْأَيْمَـٰنَ بَعْدَ تَوْكِيدِهَا وَقَدْ جَعَلْتُمُ ٱللَّهَ عَلَيْكُمْ كَفِيلًا ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ مَا تَفْعَلُونَ
And fulfill the covenant of Allāh when you have taken it, [O believers], and do not break oaths after their confirmation while you have made Allāh, over you, a security [i.e., witness]. Indeed, Allāh knows what you do.
وقال تَعَالَى:
And He the Exalted said:
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ أَوْفُوا۟ بِٱلْعُقُودِ ۚ أُحِلَّتْ لَكُم بَهِيمَةُ ٱلْأَنْعَـٰمِ إِلَّا مَا يُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ غَيْرَ مُحِلِّى ٱلصَّيْدِ وَأَنتُمْ حُرُمٌ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَحْكُمُ مَا يُرِيدُ
O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.1 Lawful for you are the animals of grazing livestock except for that which is recited to you [in this Qur’ān] - hunting not being permitted while you are in the state of iḥrām.2 Indeed, Allāh ordains what He intends.
وقال تَعَالَى:
And He the Exalted said:
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لِمَ تَقُولُونَ مَا لَا تَفْعَلُونَ
O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do?
وعن أَبي هريرة - ﵁: أنَّ رسول الله - ﷺ - قَالَ: «آيَةُ المُنَافِقِ ثَلاَثٌ: إِذَا حَدَّثَ كَذَبَ، وَإِذَا وَعَدَ أَخْلَفَ، وَإِذَا اؤْتُمِنَ خَانَ». متفقٌ عَلَيْهِ. زَادَ في روايةٍ لمسلم: «وإنْ صَامَ وَصَلَّى وَزَعَمَ أنَّهُ مُسْلِمٌ».
On the authority of Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “The signs of the hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks his word; and when he is entrusted with something, he betrays the trust.” Agreed upon. In a narration of Muslim he added: “Even if he fasts and prays and claims that he is a Muslim.”
وعن عبد الله بن عمرو بن العاص ﵄: أنَّ رسول الله - ﷺ - قَالَ: «أرْبَعٌ مَنْ كُنَّ فِيهِ كَانَ مُنَافِقًا خَالِصًا، وَمَنْ كَانَتْ فِيهِ خَصْلَةٌ مِنْهُنَّ كَانَتْ فِيهِ خَصْلَةٌ مِنَ النِّفَاقِ حَتَّى يَدَعَهَا: إِذَا اؤْتُمِنَ خَانَ، وَإِذَا حَدَّثَ كَذَبَ، وَإِذَا عَاهَدَ غَدَرَ، وَإِذَا خَاصَمَ فَجَرَ». متفقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
On the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ (may Allah be pleased with them both): that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “There are four traits: whoever has all of them in him is a pure hypocrite, and whoever has one of them in him has in him a trait of hypocrisy until he abandons it: when he is entrusted with something, he betrays the trust; when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a covenant, he proves treacherous; and when he disputes, he turns to wrongdoing.” Agreed upon.
وعن جابر - ﵁ - قَالَ: قَالَ لي النبيُّ - ﷺ: «لَوْ قَدْ جَاءَ مَالُ الْبَحْرَيْنِ أعْطَيْتُكَ هكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهكَذَا» فَلَمْ يَجِئْ مَالُ الْبَحْرَينِ حَتَّى قُبِضَ النَّبيُّ - ﷺ - فَلَمَّا جَاءَ مَالُ الْبَحْرَيْنِ أمَرَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ - ﵁ - فَنَادَى: مَنْ كَانَ لَهُ عِنْدَ رسول الله - ﷺ - عِدَةٌ أَوْ دَيْنٌ فَلْيَأتِنَا، فَأتَيْتُهُ وَقُلْتُ لَهُ: إنَّ النَّبيَّ - ﷺ - قَالَ لي كَذَا وَكَذَا، فَحَثَى لي حَثْيَةً فَعَدَدْتُهَا، فَإذَا هِيَ خَمْسُمِئَةٍ، فَقَالَ لِي: خُذْ مِثْلَيْهَا. متفقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
On the authority of Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Prophet (ﷺ) said to me: “Once the wealth of Bahrain comes, I will give you this much and this much and this much.” But the wealth of Bahrain did not arrive until the Prophet (ﷺ) had passed away. When the wealth of Bahrain did come, Abū Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) gave the order and proclaimed: “Whoever was owed a promise or a debt by the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), let him come to us.” So I came to him and said to him: “The Prophet (ﷺ) said such-and-such to me.” He then scooped out a handful for me, and I counted it, and it came to five hundred. Then he said to me: “Take twice as much again.” Agreed upon.
