Allah, the Most High, said:
رياض الصالحينAbū Zakariyyā Muḥyī al-Dīn Yaḥyā ibn Sharaf al-Nawawī٥٤ - باب فضل البكاء من خشية الله تعالى وشوقا إليه

And they fall upon their faces weeping, and it [i.e., the Qur’ān] increases them in humble submission.
And He, the Most High, said:
أَفَمِنْ هَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ تَعْجَبُونَ
Then at this statement do you wonder?
وعن ابن مسعود - ﵁ - قَالَ: قَالَ لِي النَّبيُّ - ﷺ: «اقْرَأْ عليَّ القُرْآنَ» قلت: يَا رسول اللهِ، أقرأُ عَلَيْكَ، وَعَلَيْكَ أُنْزِلَ؟! قَالَ: «إِنِّي أُحِبُّ أَنْ أسْمَعَهُ مِنْ غَيرِي» فَقَرَأْتُ عَلَيْهِ سورةَ النِّسَاءِ، حَتَّى جِئْتُ إِلى هذِهِ الآية: ﴿فَكَيْفَ إِذَا جِئْنَا مِنْ كُلِّ أُمَّةٍ بِشَهيدٍ وَجِئْنَا بِكَ عَلَى هؤُلاءِ شَهيدًا﴾ [النساء: ٤١] قَالَ: «حَسْبُكَ الآنَ» فَالَتَفَتُّ إِلَيْهِ فإذا عَيْنَاهُ تَذْرِفَان. متفقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
On the authority of Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me, “Recite the Qurʾān to me.” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, shall I recite it to you, when it was revealed to you?” He said, “I love to hear it from someone other than myself.” So I recited to him Sūrat al-Nisāʾ, until I reached this verse: 『How then will it be, when We bring forward from every nation a witness and bring you as a witness over these?』 [al-Nisāʾ: 41]. He said, “Enough now.” I turned towards him, and behold, his eyes were overflowing with tears. Agreed upon.
وعن أنس - ﵁ - قَالَ: خطب رسول الله - ﷺ - خُطْبَةً مَا سَمِعْتُ مِثْلَهَا قَطُّ، فقال: «لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ مَا أعْلَمُ، لَضَحِكْتُمْ قَليلًا وَلَبَكَيْتُمْ كَثِيرًا» قَالَ: فَغَطَّى أصْحَابُ رسول الله - ﷺ - وُجُوهَهُمْ، وَلَهُمْ خَنِينٌ. متفقٌ عَلَيْهِ. وَسَبقَ بَيَانُهُ في بَابِ الخَوْفِ.
On the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon the like of which I had never heard, in which he said, “Were you to know what I know, you would laugh little and weep much.” He said: So the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) covered their faces, sobbing softly. Agreed upon. Its explanation has already preceded in the Chapter on Fear.
وعن أَبي هريرة - ﵁ - قَالَ: قَالَ رسول الله - ﷺ: «لا يَلِجُ النَّارَ رَجُلٌ بَكَى مِنْ خَشْيَةِ اللهِ حَتَّى يَعُودَ اللَّبَنُ في الضَّرْعِ، وَلاَ يَجْتَمِعُ غُبَارٌ في سبيلِ اللهِ وَدُخَانُ جَهَنَّمَ». رواه الترمذي، وقال: «حديثٌ حَسنٌ صحيحٌ».
On the authority of Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “No man who has wept out of fear of Allah shall enter the Fire until the milk returns to the udder; and the dust raised in the path of Allah and the smoke of Hell shall never combine.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A good and sound hadith.”
وعنه، قَالَ: قَالَ رسول الله - ﷺ: «سَبْعَةٌ يُظِلُّهُمُ اللهُ في ظِلِّهِ يَوْمَ لا ظِلَّ إِلاَّ ظِلُّهُ: إمَامٌ عَادِلٌ، وَشَابٌ نَشَأَ فِي عِبَادَةِ اللهِ تَعَالَى، وَرَجُلٌ قَلْبُهُ مُعَلَّقٌ بِالمَسَاجِدِ، وَرَجُلاَنِ تَحَابّا في الله اجْتَمَعَا عَلَيْهِ وتَفَرَّقَا عَلَيْهِ، وَرَجُلٌ دَعَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ ذَاتُ مَنْصِبٍ وَجَمَالٍ، فَقال: إنِّي أَخَافُ الله، وَرَجُلٌ تَصَدَّقَ بِصَدَقَةٍ فَأخْفَاهَا حَتَّى لاَ تَعْلَمَ شِمَالُه مَا تُنْفِقُ يَمِينُهُ، وَرَجُلٌ ذَكَرَ الله خَالِيًا ففاضت عَيْنَاهُ». متفقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
On his authority, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “There are seven whom Allah will shade in His shade on the Day when there is no shade but His: a just ruler; a youth who grew up in the worship of Allah, the Most High; a man whose heart is attached to the mosques; two men who love one another for the sake of Allah, meeting upon that and parting upon that; a man whom a woman of rank and beauty calls, and he says, ‘Indeed I fear Allah’; a man who gives charity and conceals it, so that his left hand does not know what his right hand spends; and a man who remembers Allah in solitude and his eyes overflow with tears.” Agreed upon.
وعن عبد الله بن الشِّخِّير - ﵁ - قَالَ: أتيتُ رسولَ الله - ﷺ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي ولِجَوْفِهِ أَزِيزٌ كَأَزِيزِ المِرْجَلِ مِنَ البُكَاءِ. حديث صحيح رواه أَبو داود والترمذي في الشمائل بإسناد صحيح.
On the authority of ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Shikhkhīr (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was praying, and within his chest was a sound like the boiling of a cauldron, from weeping. A sound hadith, narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī in al-Shamāʾil with a sound chain of narration.
وعن أنس - ﵁ - قَالَ: قَالَ رسول الله - ﷺ - لأُبَي بن كعب - ﵁: «إنَّ الله - ﷿ - أَمَرَنِي أَنْ أقْرَأَ عَلَيْكَ: ﴿لَمْ يَكُنِ الَّذِينَ كَفَروا ...﴾ قَالَ: وَسَمَّانِي؟ قَالَ: «نَعَمْ» فَبَكَى أُبَيٌّ. متفقٌ عَلَيْهِ. وفي رواية: فَجَعَلَ أُبَيٌّ يَبْكِي.
On the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Ubayy ibn Kaʿb (may Allah be pleased with him), “Indeed Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has commanded me to recite to you: 『Those who disbelieved were not …』” He said, “And did He name me?” He said, “Yes.” So Ubayy wept. Agreed upon. In another narration: Ubayy began to weep.
وعنه، قَالَ: قَالَ أَبو بكر لِعُمَرَ، ﵄، بعد وفاة رسول الله - ﷺ: انْطَلِقْ بِنَا إِلى أُمِّ أيْمَنَ ﵂ نَزورُهَا، كَمَا كَانَ رسول الله - ﷺ - يَزُورُها، فَلَمَّا انْتَهَيَا إِلَيْهَا بَكَتْ، فقالا لها: مَا يُبْكِيكِ؟ أمَا تَعْلَمِينَ أنَّ مَا عِنْدَ الله تَعَالَى خَيرٌ لرسولِ الله - ﷺ! قالت: مَا أبْكِي أَنْ لاَ أَكُونَ أَعْلَمُ أنَّ مَا عِنْدَ اللهِ خَيْرٌ لرسولِ الله - ﷺ - وَلكِنِّي أبكِي أَنَّ الْوَحْيَ قَد انْقَطَعَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ؛ فَهَيَّجَتْهُما عَلَى البُكَاءِ، فَجَعَلا يَبْكِيَانِ مَعَهَا. رواه مسلم، وقد سبق في بابِ زِيارَةِ أهلِ الخَيْرِ.
On his authority, who said: After the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Abū Bakr said to ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both), “Come with us to Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her) to visit her, as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to visit her.” When they reached her, she wept. They said to her, “What makes you weep? Do you not know that what is with Allah, the Most High, is better for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?” She said, “I do not weep because I do not know that what is with Allah is better for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); rather I weep because the revelation from heaven has been cut off.” So she moved them both to weeping, and they began to weep along with her. Narrated by Muslim, and it has already preceded in the Chapter on Visiting the People of Goodness.
وعن ابن عمر ﵄، قَالَ: لَمَّا اشْتَدَّ برسول الله - ﷺ - وَجَعُهُ، قِيلَ له في الصَّلاَةِ، فقال: «مُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ» فقالت عائشة ﵂: إنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ رَجُلٌ رَقِيقٌ، إِذَا قَرَأَ القُرْآنَ غَلَبَهُ البُكَاءُ، فقال: «مُرُوهُ فَليُصَلِّ». وفي رواية عن عائشة، ﵂، قالت: قلت: إنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ إِذَا قَامَ مَقَامَكَ لَمْ يُسْمِعِ النَّاسَ مِنَ البُكَاءِ. متفقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
On the authority of Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: When the illness of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) grew severe, he was asked about the prayer, so he said, “Order Abū Bakr to lead the people in prayer.” ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said, “Abū Bakr is a tender-hearted man; when he recites the Qurʾān, weeping overcomes him.” He said, “Order him to lead the prayer.” In another narration from ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her), she said: I said, “When Abū Bakr stands in your place, the people will not be able to hear him because of weeping.” Agreed upon.
وعن إبراهيم بن عبد الرحمان بن عوف: أنَّ عبد الرحمان بن عوف - ﵁ - أُتِيَ بطعام وكان صائِمًا، فقال: قُتِلَ مُصْعَبُ بن عُمَيْر - ﵁ - وَهُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنِّي، فَلَمْ يوجَدْ له مَا يُكَفَّنُ فيهِ إِلاَّ بُرْدَةٌ إنْ غُطِّيَ بِهَا رَأْسُهُ بَدَتْ رِجْلاهُ؛ وَإنْ غُطِّيَ بِهَا رِجْلاَهُ بَدَا رَأْسُهُ، ثُمَّ بُسِطَ لَنَا مِنَ الدُّنْيَا مَا بُسِطَ - أَو قَالَ: أُعْطِينَا مِنَ الدُّنْيَا مَا أُعْطِينَا - قَدْ خَشِينا أَنْ تَكُونَ حَسَنَاتُنَا عُجِّلَتْ لَنَا، ثُمَّ جَعَلَ يَبكِي حَتَّى تَرَكَ الطعَام. رواه البخاري.
On the authority of Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf, that ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf (may Allah be pleased with him) was brought food while he was fasting, and he said: Muṣʿab ibn ʿUmayr (may Allah be pleased with him) was killed, and he was better than I; yet nothing was found in which to shroud him except a cloak which, if his head were covered with it, his feet would show, and if his feet were covered with it, his head would show. Then there was spread out for us of the world what was spread out — or he said: we were given of the world what we were given — and we have come to fear that our good deeds may have been hastened for us. Then he began to weep until he left the food. Narrated by al-Bukhārī.
وعن أَبي أُمَامَة صُدَيِّ بن عجلان الباهلي - ﵁ - عن النبي - ﷺ - قَالَ: «لَيْسَ شَيْءٌ أحَبَّ إِلى اللهِ تَعَالَى مِنْ قطْرَتَيْنِ وَأثَرَيْنِ: قَطَرَةُ دُمُوع مِنْ خَشْيَةِ اللهِ، وَقَطَرَةُ دَمٍ تُهَرَاقُ في سَبيلِ اللهِ. وَأَمَّا الأَثَرَانِ: فَأَثَرٌ في سَبيلِ اللهِ تَعَالَى، وَأَثَرٌ في فَريضةٍ مِنْ فَرائِضِ الله تَعَالَى». رواه الترمذي، وقال: «حديثٌ حسنٌ». وفي الباب أحاديث كثيرة منها: حديث العرباض بن سارية - ﵁ - قَالَ: وعظنا رسول الله - ﷺ - مَوعظةً وَجلَتْ منها القُلُوبُ، وذرِفت منها الْعُيُونُ. وقد سبق في باب النهي عن البدع .
On the authority of Abū Umāmah Ṣudayy ibn ʿAjlān al-Bāhilī (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: “There is nothing more beloved to Allah, the Most High, than two drops and two marks: a drop of tears out of fear of Allah, and a drop of blood shed in the path of Allah. As for the two marks: a mark left in the path of Allah, the Most High, and a mark left in (the performance of) an obligatory duty among the obligations of Allah, the Most High.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A good hadith.” In this chapter there are many hadiths, among them the hadith of al-ʿIrbāḍ ibn Sāriyah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) admonished us with an admonition by which hearts trembled and eyes shed tears. And it has already preceded in the Chapter on the Prohibition of Innovations.
