١٠٨ - باب كراهية الأكل متكئا

On the authority of Abū Juḥayfah Wahb ibn ʿAbd Allāh (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I do not eat reclining." Narrated by al-Bukhārī. Al-Khaṭṭābī said: the one reclining (al-muttakiʾ) here means the one who sits leaning upon some padding beneath him. He said: what was meant is that he would not sit upon padding and cushions in the manner of one who wishes to eat a great deal of food; rather he would sit poised [to rise], not settled comfortably, and eat only what suffices. This is al-Khaṭṭābī's statement. Others have indicated that the one reclining is the one leaning upon his side. And Allah knows best.

And on the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sitting in a squatting posture, eating dates. Narrated by Muslim. "Al-muqʿī" is the one who places his buttocks on the ground and raises his shins.
