Allah the Exalted said:
رياض الصالحينAbū Zakariyyā Muḥyī al-Dīn Yaḥyā ibn Sharaf al-Nawawī٢٦٢ - باب الحث على التثبت فيما يقوله ويحكيه
٢٦٢ - باب الحث على التثبت فيما يقوله ويحكيه
And do not pursue1 that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
And He the Exalted said:
مَّا يَلْفِظُ مِن قَوْلٍ إِلَّا لَدَيْهِ رَقِيبٌ عَتِيدٌ
He [i.e., man] utters no word except that with him is an observer prepared [to record].
وعن أَبي هريرة - ﵁: أنَّ النبيَّ - ﷺ - قَالَ: «كَفَى بالمَرْءِ كَذِبًا أَنْ يُحَدِّثَ بِكُلِّ مَا سَمِعَ». رواه مسلم.
It is related from Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet ﷺ said: "It is enough of a lie for a man to relate everything he hears." Reported by Muslim.
وعن سَمُرَةَ - ﵁ - قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ الله - ﷺ: «مَنْ حَدَّثَ عَنِّي بِحَديثٍ يَرَى أَنَّهُ كَذِبٌ فَهُوَ أَحَدُ الكَاذِبِينَ». رواه مسلم.
It is related from Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever relates a hadith from me deeming it to be a lie is one of the two liars." Reported by Muslim.
وعن أسماء ﵂: أنَّ امْرأةً قالت: يَا رسولَ الله، إنَّ لِي ضَرَّةً فهل عَلَيَّ جُنَاحٌ إنْ تَشَبَّعْتُ مِنْ زَوْجِي غَيْرَ الَّذِي يُعْطِيني؟ فَقَالَ النَّبيُّ - ﷺ: «المُتَشَبِّعُ بِما لَمْ يُعْطَ كَلاَبِسِ ثَوْبَيْ زُورٍ». متفق عَلَيْهِ. «وَالمُتَشَبِّعُ»: هُوَ الَّذِي يُظْهِرُ الشَّبَعَ وَلَيْسَ بِشَبْعَان. ومعناهُ هُنَا: أَنْ يُظْهِرَ أنَّهُ حَصَلَ لَهُ فَضيلَةٌ وَلَيْسَتْ حَاصِلَةً. «وَلابِسُ ثَوْبَي زُورٍ» أيْ: ذِي زُورٍ، وَهُوَ الَّذِي يُزَوِّرُ عَلَى النَّاسِ، بِأنْ يَتَزَيَّى بِزِيِّ أهْلِ الزُّهْدِ أَو العِلْمِ أَو الثَّرْوَةِ، لِيَغْتَرَّ بِهِ النَّاسُ وَلَيْسَ هُوَ بِتِلْكَ الصِّفَةِ. وَقَيلَ غَيرُ ذَلِكَ واللهُ أعْلَمُ.
It is related from Asmāʾ (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a woman said: O Messenger of Allah, I have a co-wife; is there any sin upon me if I feign satisfaction from my husband with something he has not given me? The Prophet ﷺ said: "The one who feigns satisfaction with what he has not been given is like one who wears two garments of falsehood." Agreed upon. "The one who feigns satisfaction (al-mutashabbiʿ)" is the one who displays fullness while not being full; its meaning here is that a person displays that he has attained some merit which he has not in fact attained. "And the wearer of two garments of falsehood" means: one possessed of falsehood — that is, the one who deceives people by adopting the appearance of the people of asceticism, or of knowledge, or of wealth, so that people are deceived by him while he is not of that description. Other explanations have also been given, and Allah knows best.
