Allah, the Exalted, said:
٢٦ - باب تحريم الظلم والأمر برد المظالم
Allah, the Exalted, said:
And warn them, [O Muḥammad], of the Approaching Day, when hearts are at the throats, filled [with distress]. For the wrongdoers there will be no devoted friend and no intercessor [who is] obeyed.
And the Exalted said:
And they worship besides Allāh that for which He has not sent down authority and that of which they have no knowledge. And there will not be for the wrongdoers any helper.
As for the hadiths, among them is the hadith of Abū Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), mentioned earlier at the end of the chapter on striving against the self.
Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Beware of wrongdoing, for wrongdoing will be darknesses on the Day of Resurrection. And beware of avarice, for avarice destroyed those who came before you: it drove them to shed their blood and to violate what was sacred to them.” Muslim narrated it.
Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “You shall surely render the rights back to those entitled to them on the Day of Resurrection, so that even the hornless sheep will be granted retaliation against the horned sheep.” Muslim narrated it.
Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: We used to speak about the Farewell Pilgrimage while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was among us, and we did not know what the Farewell Pilgrimage was, until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) praised Allah and extolled Him, then mentioned the Messiah, the Dajjāl, and spoke at length about him. He said: “Allah never sent a prophet but that he warned his nation of him; Nūḥ warned of him, and so did the prophets after him. Indeed, if he appears among you, no aspect of his case that is hidden from others will be hidden from you. Your Lord is not one-eyed, but he is blind in his right eye, as though his eye were a floating grape. Behold! Allah has made your blood and your property sacred to you, like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this land of yours, in this month of yours. Behold! Have I conveyed the message?” They said: “Yes.” He said: “O Allah, bear witness” — three times — “Woe to you” — or “Alas for you” — “take heed: do not return after me as disbelievers, striking one another’s necks.” Al-Bukhārī narrated it, and Muslim narrated part of it.
ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever wrongfully seizes a hand-span of land, it will be fastened around his neck from the seven earths.” Agreed upon.
Abū Mūsā (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Indeed, Allah grants respite to the wrongdoer, but when He seizes him, He does not let him escape.” Then he recited: {And such is the seizing of your Lord when He seizes the towns while they are doing wrong. Indeed, His seizing is painful and severe} [Hūd: 102]. Agreed upon.
Muʿādh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me forth and said: “You are going to a people from among the People of the Book, so call them to testify that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah. If they obey you in that, then inform them that Allah has made obligatory upon them five prayers in every day and night. If they obey you in that, then inform them that Allah has made obligatory upon them a charity taken from their rich and returned to their poor. If they obey you in that, then beware of taking the choicest of their property, and fear the supplication of the wronged, for there is no veil between it and Allah.” Agreed upon.
Abū Ḥumayd ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Saʿd al-Sāʿidī (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed a man from the Azd, called Ibn al-Lutbiyya, over the collection of charity. When he returned, he said: “This is for you, and this was given to me as a gift.” So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up on the pulpit, praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: “Now then: I appoint a man from among you over a task that Allah has entrusted to me, and he comes and says, ‘This is for you, and this is a gift that was given to me.’ Why did he not sit in the house of his father or his mother until his gift came to him, if he is truthful? By Allah, none of you takes anything wrongfully but that he will meet Allah, the Exalted, carrying it on the Day of Resurrection. So let me not find any of you meeting Allah carrying a groaning camel, or a lowing cow, or a bleating sheep.” Then he raised his hands until the whiteness of his armpits could be seen, and said: “O Allah, have I conveyed the message?” — three times. Agreed upon.
Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: “Whoever has wronged his brother, regarding his honour or anything else, let him seek his absolution from it today, before there will be neither dinar nor dirham. If he has any righteous deed, an amount equal to his wrong will be taken from it; and if he has no good deeds, then some of his companion’s bad deeds will be taken and loaded upon him.” Al-Bukhārī narrated it.
ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: “The Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe, and the emigrant (muhājir) is the one who forsakes what Allah has forbidden.” Agreed upon.
And on his authority (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: There was a man in charge of the Prophet's ﷺ baggage, called Kirkirah, who died. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “He is in the Fire.” So they went to look into it, and they found a cloak that he had pilfered from the spoils. Al-Bukhārī narrated it.
And on the authority of Abū Bakrah Nufayʿ ibn al-Hārith (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet ﷺ, that he said: “Time has come full circle to its form on the day Allah created the heavens and the earth: the year is twelve months, of which four are sacred—three consecutive: Dhū al-Qaʿdah, Dhū al-Hijjah, and al-Muharram; and Rajab of Muḍar, which falls between Jumādā and Shaʿbān. Which month is this?” We said: “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He fell silent until we thought he would call it by some name other than its own. He said: “Is it not Dhū al-Hijjah?” We said: “Yes, indeed.” He said: “Then which land is this?” We said: “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He fell silent until we thought he would call it by some name other than its own. He said: “Is it not the Sacred City?” We said: “Yes, indeed.” He said: “Then which day is this?” We said: “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He fell silent until we thought he would call it by some name other than its own. He said: “Is it not the Day of Sacrifice?” We said: “Yes, indeed.” He said: “Then indeed your blood, your property, and your honour are inviolable among you, like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this land of yours, in this month of yours. You will meet your Lord, and He will question you about your deeds. Beware—do not return after me as disbelievers, striking one another's necks. Beware—let the one present convey to the one absent, for perhaps some to whom it is conveyed will be more mindful of it than some who heard it directly.” Then he said: “Have I not conveyed? Beware—have I conveyed?” We said: “Yes.” He said: “O Allah, bear witness.” Agreed upon.
And on the authority of Abū Umāmah Iyās ibn Thaʿlabah al-Hārithī (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever seizes the right of a Muslim by a (false) oath, Allah has decreed the Fire for him and forbidden him Paradise.” A man said: “Even if it be something trifling, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “Even if it be a twig of the arāk tree.” Muslim narrated it.
And on the authority of ʿAdī ibn ʿAmīrah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “Whomever among you we appoint to an office, and he then conceals from us so much as a needle or more, that is misappropriation (ghulūl) which he will bring on the Day of Resurrection.” A black man of the Anṣār stood up to him—it is as though I can still see him—and said: “O Messenger of Allah, relieve me of your appointment.” He said: “And what is the matter with you?” He said: “I heard you say such-and-such.” He said: “And I say it now: whomever we appoint to an office, let him bring all of it, its little and its much; then whatever he is given of it he may take, and whatever he is forbidden he must abstain from.” Muslim narrated it.
And on the authority of ʿUmar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: On the day of Khaybar a group of the Prophet's ﷺ companions came forward and said: “So-and-so is a martyr, and so-and-so is a martyr,” until they passed by a man and said: “So-and-so is a martyr.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “No indeed! I have seen him in the Fire on account of a mantle—or a cloak—that he stole from the spoils.” Muslim narrated it.
And on the authority of Abū Qatādah al-Hārith ibn Ribʿī (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: that he stood among them and mentioned to them that striving in the way of Allah and faith in Allah are the best of deeds. A man stood up and said: “O Messenger of Allah, tell me—if I am killed in the way of Allah, will my sins be expiated for me?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: “Yes, if you are killed in the way of Allah while you are patient, seeking reward, advancing and not retreating.” Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “How did you put it?” He said: “Tell me—if I am killed in the way of Allah, will my sins be expiated for me?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: “Yes, while you are patient, seeking reward, advancing and not retreating—except for the debt; for Gabriel (peace be upon him) told me that.” Muslim narrated it.
And on the authority of Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Do you know who the bankrupt one is?” They said: “The bankrupt among us is one who has neither dirham nor goods.” He said: “The bankrupt of my Ummah is the one who comes on the Day of Resurrection with prayer, fasting and zakāh, but comes having reviled this one, slandered that one, devoured the wealth of this one, shed the blood of that one, and struck this one. So this one is given of his good deeds, and that one of his good deeds; and if his good deeds are exhausted before what he owes is settled, some of their sins are taken and cast upon him, and then he is cast into the Fire.” Muslim narrated it.
And on the authority of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her): that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “I am only a human being, and you bring your disputes to me. Perhaps one of you is more eloquent in his argument than another, so I judge in his favour according to what I hear. So whoever—I rule in his favour with something that is his brother's by right—I am only cutting off for him a piece of the Fire.” Agreed upon. “Alḥan” means: more knowledgeable (in presenting his case).
And on the authority of Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The believer will continue to enjoy latitude in his religion so long as he does not shed unlawful blood.” Al-Bukhārī narrated it.
And on the authority of Khawlah bint ʿĀmir al-Anṣāriyyah—she being the wife of Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him)—and on her authority, she said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “Indeed, there are men who dispose wrongfully of Allah's wealth without right; theirs is the Fire on the Day of Resurrection.” Al-Bukhārī narrated it.
