Allah the Exalted said:
١١٧ - باب استحباب الثوب الأبيض، وجواز الأحمر والأخضر والأصفر والأسود، وجوازه من قطن وكتان وشعر وصوف وغيرها إلا الحرير
Allah the Exalted said:
O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best. That is from the signs of Allāh that perhaps they will remember.
And He, the Exalted, said:
And Allāh has made for you, from that which He has created, shadows [i.e., shade] and has made for you from the mountains, shelters and has made for you garments which protect you from the heat and garments [i.e., coats of mail] which protect you from your [enemy in] battle. Thus does He complete His favor upon you that you might submit [to Him].
On the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both): the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Wear white from among your garments, for it is among the best of your garments, and shroud your dead in it." Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who said: "A good and sound hadith."
On the authority of Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Wear white, for it is purer and more wholesome, and shroud your dead in it." Narrated by al-Nasāʾī and al-Ḥākim, who said: "A sound hadith."
On the authority of al-Barāʾ (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was of medium height. I once saw him in a red garment, and I have never seen anything more handsome than him. Agreed upon.
On the authority of Abū Juḥayfah Wahb ibn ʿAbd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I saw the Prophet ﷺ at Mecca while he was at al-Abṭaḥ in a red tent of leather. Bilāl came out with his ablution water, and some people got a little of it while others sought a share of it. Then the Prophet ﷺ came out wearing a red garment — it is as though I am looking at the whiteness of his shins. He performed ablution and Bilāl gave the call to prayer, and I began to follow his mouth here and there as he turned to the right and to the left saying, "Come to prayer, come to success." Then a spear-staff was fixed in the ground for him, and he stepped forward and prayed; a dog and a donkey passed in front of him without being prevented. Agreed upon. "Al-ʿanazah," with a fatḥah on the nūn, is like a walking-staff.
On the authority of Abū Rimthah Rifāʿah al-Taymī (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wearing two green garments. Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī with a sound chain.
On the authority of Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him): the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered on the day of the Conquest of Mecca wearing a black turban. Narrated by Muslim.
On the authority of Abū Saʿīd ʿAmr ibn Ḥurayth (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: It is as though I am looking at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wearing a black turban, having let its two ends hang down between his shoulders. Narrated by Muslim. In another narration of his: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed the people while wearing a black turban.
On the authority of ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was shrouded in three white Saḥūlī garments of cotton, among which there was neither a shirt nor a turban. Agreed upon. "Al-saḥūliyyah" — with a fatḥah or a ḍammah on the sīn and a ḍammah on the (undotted) ḥāʾ — are garments attributed to Saḥūl, a village in Yemen. "Al-kursuf" is cotton.
And on her authority, she said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out one morning wearing a patterned cloak of black goat-hair. Narrated by Muslim. "Al-mirṭ," with a kasrah on the mīm, is a cloak; and "al-muraḥḥal," with the (undotted) ḥāʾ, is one that has on it the depiction of camel-saddles, which are the akwār.
On the authority of al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one night on a journey, and he said to me, "Do you have water with you?" I said, "Yes." So he dismounted from his riding-beast and walked until he disappeared into the darkness of the night. Then he came back, and I poured water for him from the water-skin. He washed his face while wearing a woollen cloak, but he could not get his forearms out of it, so he brought them out from beneath the cloak. He then washed his forearms and wiped over his head. Then I bent down to remove his leather socks, but he said, "Leave them, for I put them on while [my feet were] pure," and he wiped over them. Agreed upon. In one narration: he was wearing a Syrian cloak with narrow sleeves. In another narration: that this incident took place during the Expedition of Tabūk.
