Allah, the Exalted, said:
رياض الصالحينAbū Zakariyyā Muḥyī al-Dīn Yaḥyā ibn Sharaf al-Nawawī٢٩٠ - باب تحريم النظر إلى المرأة الأجنبية والأمرد الحسن لغير حاجة شرعية
٢٩٠ - باب تحريم النظر إلى المرأة الأجنبية والأمرد الحسن لغير حاجة شرعية
Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision1 and guard their private parts.2 That is purer for them. Indeed, Allāh is [fully] Aware of what they do.
And the Exalted said:
وَلَا تَقْفُ مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِۦ عِلْمٌ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَٱلْبَصَرَ وَٱلْفُؤَادَ كُلُّ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ كَانَ عَنْهُ مَسْـُٔولًا
And do not pursue1 that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
وقال تَعَالَى:
And the Exalted also said:
يَعْلَمُ خَآئِنَةَ ٱلْأَعْيُنِ وَمَا تُخْفِى ٱلصُّدُورُ
He knows that which deceives the eyes and what the breasts conceal.
وقال تَعَالَى:
And the Exalted also said:
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِٱلْمِرْصَادِ
Indeed, your Lord is in observation.
وعن أَبي هريرة - ﵁: أنَّ النبيَّ - ﷺ - قَالَ: «كُتِبَ عَلَى ابْن آدَمَ نَصِيبُهُ مِنَ الزِّنَا مُدْرِكُ ذَلِكَ لاَ مَحَالَةَ: العَيْنَانِ زِنَاهُمَا النَّظَرُ، وَالأُذُنَانِ زِنَاهُمَا الاسْتِمَاعُ، وَاللِّسَانُ زِناهُ الكَلاَمُ، وَاليَدُ زِنَاهَا البَطْشُ، وَالرِّجْلُ زِنَاهَا الخُطَا، والقَلْبُ يَهْوَى وَيَتَمَنَّى، وَيُصَدِّقُ ذَلِكَ الفَرْجُ أَوْ يُكَذِّبُهُ». متفق عَلَيْهِ. هَذَا لفظ مسلمٍ، ورواية البخاري مختصرَةٌ.
And on the authority of Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "For the son of Adam his share of fornication has been decreed, which he will inevitably attain: the two eyes — their fornication is looking; the two ears — their fornication is listening; the tongue — its fornication is speech; the hand — its fornication is striking; the foot — its fornication is walking [towards it]; the heart longs and desires, and the private part confirms that or denies it." Agreed upon. This is the wording of Muslim, and al-Bukhārī's narration is abridged.
وعن أَبي سعيد الخُدريِّ - ﵁ - عن النبيِّ - ﷺ - قَالَ: «إيّاكُمْ والجُلُوس فِي الطُّرُقَاتِ!» قالوا: يَا رسولَ الله، مَا لَنَا مِنْ مَجَالِسِنَا بُدٌّ، نَتَحَدَّثُ فِيهَا. فَقَالَ رسولُ الله - ﷺ: «فَإذَا أبَيْتُمْ إِلاَّ المَجْلِسَ، فَأَعْطُوا الطَّرِيقَ حَقَّهُ» قَالُوا: وَمَا حَقُّ الطَّريقِ يَا رسولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ: «غَضُّ البَصَرِ، وَكَفُّ الأَذَى، وَرَدُّ السَّلاَمِ، والأَمرُ بِالمَعْرُوفِ، والنَّهيُ عنِ المُنْكَرِ» متفق عَلَيْهِ.
And on the authority of Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (ﷺ), who said: "Beware of sitting in the roadways!" They said: "O Messenger of Allah, we have no alternative to our gatherings, in which we converse." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "If you insist on the gathering, then give the road its due." They said: "And what is the due of the road, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Lowering the gaze, refraining from harm, returning the greeting, enjoining good, and forbidding evil." Agreed upon.
وعن أَبي طلحة زيد بن سهل - ﵁ - قَالَ: كُنَّا قُعُودًا بالأفْنِيَةِ نَتَحَدَّثُ فِيهَا فَجَاءَ رسولُ اللهِ - ﷺ - فَقَامَ عَلَيْنَا، فَقَالَ: «مَا لَكُمْ وَلِمَجَالسِ الصُّعُدَاتِ؟ اجْتَنِبُوا مَجَالِسَ الصُّعُدَاتِ». فقُلْنَا: إنَّمَا قَعَدْنَا لِغَيْرِ مَا بَأسٍ، قَعَدْنَا نَتَذَاكَرُ، وَنَتَحَدَّثُ. قَالَ: «إمَّا لاَ فَأَدُّوا حَقَّهَا: غَضُّ البَصَرِ، وَرَدُّ السَّلاَمِ، وَحُسْنُ الكَلاَمِ». رواه مسلم. «الصُّعُدات» بضمِ الصاد والعين: أيْ الطُّرقَاتِ.
And on the authority of Abū Ṭalḥah Zayd ibn Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: We were sitting in the open courtyards conversing, when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came and stood over us and said: "What is between you and the gatherings on the roads? Avoid the gatherings on the roads." We said: "We only sat with no ill purpose; we sat to discuss matters and to converse." He said: "If you must, then render the road its due: lowering the gaze, returning the greeting, and good speech." Muslim narrated it. «Al-ṣuʿudāt» — with ḍammah on the ṣād and the ʿayn — means the roadways.
وعن جرير - ﵁ - قَالَ: سألت رسول الله - ﷺ - عن نَظَرِ الفَجْأَةِ فَقَالَ: «اصْرِفْ بَصَرَكَ». رواه مسلم.
And on the authority of Jarīr (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about the sudden, unintended glance, and he said: "Turn your gaze away." Muslim narrated it.
وعن أُم سَلَمَة ﵂، قالت: كنتُ عِنْدَ رسول الله - ﷺ - وعِندَهُ مَيْمُونَة، فَأقْبَلَ ابنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ، وَذَلِكَ بَعْدَ أَنْ أُمِرْنَا بِالحِجَابِ فَقَالَ النبيُّ - ﷺ: «احْتَجِبَا مِنْهُ» فَقُلْنَا: يَا رسولَ اللهِ، ألَيْسَ هُوَ أعْمَى! لاَ يُبْصِرُنَا، وَلاَ يَعْرِفُنَا؟ فَقَالَ النَّبيُّ - ﷺ: «أفَعَمْيَاوَانِ أنتُمَا أَلَسْتُمَا تُبْصِرَانِهِ!؟». رواه أَبُو داود والترمذي، وقال: «حديث حسن صحيح».
And on the authority of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: I was with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and Maymūnah was with him, when Ibn Umm Maktūm approached — and that was after we had been commanded to observe the ḥijāb. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Veil yourselves from him." We said: "O Messenger of Allah, is he not blind? He neither sees us nor recognises us." The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Are the two of you then blind? Do you not see him?" Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī narrated it, and he (al-Tirmidhī) said: "A good, sound hadith."
وعن أَبي سعيد - ﵁: أنَّ رسول الله - ﷺ - قَالَ: «لاَ يَنْظُرُ الرَّجُلُ إِلَى عَوْرَةِ الرَّجُلِ، وَلاَ المَرْأَةُ إِلَى عَوْرَةِ المَرْأَةِ، وَلاَ يُفْضِي الرَّجُلُ إِلَى الرَّجُلِ في ثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ ، وَلاَ تُفْضي المَرْأةُ إِلَى المَرْأَةِ في الثَّوْبِ الواحِدِ». رواه مسلم.
And on the authority of Abū Saʿīd (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "A man should not look at the nakedness of another man, nor a woman at the nakedness of another woman; and a man should not lie with another man under a single garment, nor should a woman lie with another woman under a single garment." Muslim narrated it.
