On the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: A funeral procession passed by, and the people spoke well of the deceased, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "It is assured." Then another passed by, and they spoke ill of the deceased, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "It is assured." ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him) then asked, "What is assured?" He said, "This one, of whom you spoke well — Paradise is assured for him; and this one, of whom you spoke ill — the Fire is assured for him. You are Allah's witnesses on earth." Agreed upon (al-Bukhārī and Muslim).
Hadith951
- ﵁ - - ﷺ:
On the authority of Abū al-Aswad, who said: I came to Medina and sat with ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him). A funeral procession passed by them, and the deceased was spoken of well, so ʿUmar said, "It is assured." Then another passed by and the deceased was spoken of well, so ʿUmar said, "It is assured." Then a third passed by and the deceased was spoken of ill, so ʿUmar said, "It is assured." Abū al-Aswad said: I asked, "What is assured, O Commander of the Believers?" He said: I said as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Any Muslim for whom four people testify with good, Allah admits him into Paradise." We said, "And three?" He said, "And three." We said, "And two?" He said, "And two." Then we did not ask him about one. Narrated by al-Bukhārī.
