Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Ibrāhīm (peace and blessings be upon him) brought the mother of Ismāʿīl and her son Ismāʿīl, while she was still nursing him, and placed her by the House, by a great tree above Zamzam in the upper part of the Mosque. There was no one in Makkah that day, nor any water there. He placed them there and set beside them a leather bag containing dates and a water-skin containing water; then Ibrāhīm turned away, departing. The mother of Ismāʿīl followed him and said: O Ibrāhīm, where are you going, leaving us in this valley which has no companion and nothing in it? She said this to him repeatedly, but he would not turn to her. She said to him: Did Allah command you with this? He said: Yes. She said: Then He will not abandon us. Then she returned. Ibrāhīm (peace and blessings be upon him) set off until, when he was at the mountain-pass where they could not see him, he faced the House, then made these supplications, raising his hands and saying: "My Lord, I have settled some of my offspring in a valley without crops..." until he reached "...that they may give thanks." [Ibrāhīm: 37].
The mother of Ismāʿīl went on nursing Ismāʿīl and drinking from that water, until, when what was in the water-skin was exhausted, she grew thirsty and her son grew thirsty. She began to look at him writhing — or he said: tossing about — so she went off, disliking to look at him. She found al-Ṣafā the nearest hill in the land to her, so she stood upon it, then faced the valley, looking to see whether she could see anyone, but she saw no one. So she descended from al-Ṣafā until, when she reached the valley, she lifted the hem of her garment, then ran the running of an exhausted person until she crossed the valley. Then she came to al-Marwah and stood upon it and looked to see whether she could see anyone, but she saw no one. She did that seven times. Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is why people run between the two."
When she came up onto al-Marwah, she heard a voice and said: Hush — meaning to herself — then she listened intently and heard it again, so she said: You have made me hear; [help] if you have any help. And behold, there was the angel at the place of Zamzam. He dug with his heel — or he said: with his wing — until the water appeared. She began to make a basin around it, gesturing with her hand like this, and began to scoop the water into her water-skin while it gushed forth after she scooped. (In another narration: as much as she scooped.) Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah have mercy on the mother of Ismāʿīl; had she left Zamzam" — or he said: "had she not scooped from the water" — "Zamzam would have been a flowing spring." He said: So she drank and nursed her child, and the angel said to her: Do not fear destitution, for here is a House of Allah which this boy and his father will build, and Allah does not abandon His people. The House was raised from the ground like a hillock; the floods would come to it and pass on its right and its left.
Things remained thus until a company of Jurhum — or a household of Jurhum — passed by them, coming from the road of Kadāʾ, and camped in the lower part of Makkah. They saw a bird circling and said: This bird surely circles over water; our knowledge of this valley is that there is no water in it. So they sent a scout or two scouts, and behold, they found the water. They returned and informed them, so they came — and the mother of Ismāʿīl was by the water — and said: Will you permit us to camp with you? She said: Yes, but you have no right to the water. They said: Yes. Ibn ʿAbbās said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That suited the mother of Ismāʿīl, for she loved company." So they camped, sent for their families, and they camped with them, until there were several households in it. The boy grew up and learned Arabic from them, and he became most prized and pleasing to them as he grew up. When he reached maturity, they married him to a woman from among them; and the mother of Ismāʿīl died.
Ibrāhīm came after Ismāʿīl had married, to look in on those he had left, but he did not find Ismāʿīl, so he asked his wife about him. She said: He has gone out seeking [provision] for us — in another narration: hunting for us. Then he asked her about their living and condition, and she said: We are in hardship; we are in straits and difficulty — and she complained to him. He said: When your husband comes, convey to him my greeting of peace and tell him to change the threshold of his door. When Ismāʿīl came, it was as if he sensed something, and he said: Did anyone come to you? She said: Yes, an old man of such-and-such description came to us, asked us about you, and I told him; he asked me how our living was, and I told him we are in hardship and difficulty. He said: Did he charge you with anything? She said: Yes, he commanded me to convey to you his greeting of peace and says: Change the threshold of your door. He said: That was my father, and he has commanded me to part from you. Go back to your family. So he divorced her and married another from among them.
Ibrāhīm remained away from them as long as Allah willed, then came to them afterwards but did not find him, so he entered upon his wife and asked about him. She said: He has gone out seeking [provision] for us. He said: How are you? — and he asked her about their living and condition, and she said: We are in good and ease, and she praised Allah. He said: What is your food? She said: Meat. He said: And what is your drink? She said: Water. He said: O Allah, bless for them the meat and the water. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: They had no grain that day; had they had it, he would have prayed for them in it too. He said: So those two [meat and water] — no one lives on them alone, anywhere other than Makkah, but they do not agree with him. In another narration: He came and said: Where is Ismāʿīl? His wife said: He has gone hunting. His wife said: Will you not alight and eat and drink? He said: And what is your food and what is your drink? She said: Our food is meat and our drink is water. He said: O Allah, bless for them their food and their drink. He said: Abū al-Qāsim (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is the blessing of Ibrāhīm's supplication. He said: When your husband comes, convey to him my greeting of peace and tell him to keep firm the threshold of his door. When Ismāʿīl came, he said: Did anyone come to you? She said: Yes, an old man of fine appearance came to us — and she praised him — he asked me about you and I told him, and he asked me how our living was and I told him we are in good. He said: Did he charge you with anything? She said: Yes, he conveys to you his greeting of peace and commands you to keep firm the threshold of your door. He said: That was my father, and you are the threshold; he commanded me to keep you.
Then he remained away from them as long as Allah willed, then came after that while Ismāʿīl was shaping arrows of his beneath a great tree near Zamzam. When he saw him, he rose to him, and they did as a father does with a son and a son with a father. He said: O Ismāʿīl, Allah has commanded me with a command. He said: Then do what your Lord has commanded you. He said: And will you help me? He said: I will help you. He said: Allah has commanded me to build a House here — and he pointed to a mound raised above what was around it. At that point they raised the foundations of the House. Ismāʿīl began bringing the stones and Ibrāhīm building, until, when the building rose high, he brought this stone and placed it for him, and he stood upon it and built while Ismāʿīl handed him the stones, and the two of them were saying: "Our Lord, accept from us; indeed You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing." [al-Baqarah: 127].
In another narration: Ibrāhīm went out with Ismāʿīl and the mother of Ismāʿīl, with them a water-skin containing water. The mother of Ismāʿīl would drink from the water-skin so that her milk flowed for her infant, until he reached Makkah and placed her beneath a great tree; then Ibrāhīm returned to his family. The mother of Ismāʿīl followed him until, when they reached Kadāʾ, she called to him from behind him: O Ibrāhīm, to whom are you leaving us? He said: To Allah. She said: I am content with Allah. So she returned and went on drinking from the water-skin while her milk flowed for her infant, until, when the water ran out, she said: If only I went and looked, perhaps I would sense someone. He said: So she went and climbed al-Ṣafā and looked and looked to see whether she could sense anyone, but she sensed no one. When she reached the valley she ran and came to al-Marwah, and did that several times. Then she said: If only I went and looked at what has happened to the infant. So she went and looked, and behold, he was in his state, as though gasping in the throes of death. Her soul would not let her settle, so she said: If only I went and looked, perhaps I would sense someone. So she went and climbed al-Ṣafā and looked and looked, but sensed no one, until she completed seven. Then she said: If only I went and looked at what has happened.
