Allah, the Exalted, has said:
رياض الصالحينAbū Zakariyyā Muḥyī al-Dīn Yaḥyā ibn Sharaf al-Nawawī٣٨ - باب وجوب أمره أهله وأولاده المميزين وسائر من في رعيته بطاعة الله تعالى ونهيهم عن المخالفة وتأديبهم ومنعهم من ارتكاب منهي عنه
٣٨ - باب وجوب أمره أهله وأولاده المميزين وسائر من في رعيته بطاعة الله تعالى ونهيهم عن المخالفة وتأديبهم ومنعهم من ارتكاب منهي عنه
ۖ
And enjoin prayer upon your family [and people] and be steadfast therein. We ask you not for provision; We provide for you, and the [best] outcome is for [those of] righteousness.
And He, the Exalted, has also said:
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ قُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ وَأَهْلِيكُمْ نَارًا وَقُودُهَا ٱلنَّاسُ وَٱلْحِجَارَةُ عَلَيْهَا مَلَـٰٓئِكَةٌ غِلَاظٌ شِدَادٌ لَّا يَعْصُونَ ٱللَّهَ مَآ أَمَرَهُمْ وَيَفْعَلُونَ مَا يُؤْمَرُونَ
O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are [appointed] angels, harsh and severe; they do not disobey Allāh in what He commands them but do what they are commanded.
عن أَبي هريرة - ﵁ - قَالَ: أخذ الحسن بن علي ﵄ تَمْرَةً مِنْ تَمْر الصَّدَقَةِ فَجَعَلَهَا في فِيهِ، فَقَالَ رَسُول الله - ﷺ: «كَخْ كَخْ إرْمِ بِهَا، أمَا عَلِمْتَ أنَّا لا نَأكُلُ الصَّدَقَةَ!؟». مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيهِ. وفي رواية: «أنَّا لا تَحِلُّ لَنَا الصَّدَقَةُ». وقوله: «كَخْ كَخْ» يقال: بإسكان الخاء، ويقال: بكسرها مَعَ التنوين وهي كلمة زجر للصبي عن المستقذراتِ، وكان الحسن - ﵁ - صبِيًّا.
On the authority of Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with them both) took a date from the dates of the charity and put it in his mouth, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Kakh, kakh! Throw it away! Do you not know that we do not eat charity?!" Agreed upon. In another narration: "Charity is not lawful for us." His saying "kakh, kakh" is recited with the khāʾ unvowelled, and it is also recited with a kasra together with tanwīn; it is a word used to rebuke a child away from filthy things, and al-Ḥasan (may Allah be pleased with him) was a child at the time.
وعن أَبي حفص عمر بن أَبي سلمة عبد الله بن عبد الأسدِ ربيبِ رَسُول الله - ﷺ - قَالَ: كُنْتُ غلاَمًا في حجر رَسُول الله - ﷺ - وَكَانَتْ يَدي تَطِيشُ في الصَّحْفَةِ، فَقَالَ لي رَسُول الله - ﷺ: «يَا غُلامُ، سَمِّ الله تَعَالَى، وَكُلْ بيَمِينكَ، وَكُلْ مِمَّا يَلِيكَ» فَمَا زَالَتْ تِلْكَ طِعْمَتي بَعْدُ. مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيهِ. «وَتَطِيشُ»: تدور في نواحِي الصحفة.
On the authority of Abū Ḥafṣ ʿUmar ibn Abī Salama ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbd al-Asad, the stepson of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said: I was a boy under the care of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and my hand used to wander about in the dish, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: "O boy, mention the name of Allah the Exalted, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is next to you." That has remained my manner of eating ever since. Agreed upon. "And it wanders (tatīsh)" means: it moves about across the sides of the dish.
وعن ابن عمر ﵄، قَالَ: سمعت رَسُول الله - ﷺ - يقول: «كُلُّكُمْ رَاعٍ، وَكُلُّكُمْ مسْؤُولٌ عَنْ رَعِيَّتهِ: الإمَامُ رَاعٍ وَمَسْؤولٌ عَنْ رَعِيَّتِهِ، والرَّجُلُ رَاعٍ في أهْلِهِ وَمَسْؤُولٌ عَنْ رَعِيَّتِهِ، وَالمَرْأةُ رَاعِيَةٌ في بيْتِ زَوْجِهَا وَمَسْؤُولَةٌ عَنْ رَعِيَّتِهَا، وَالخَادِمُ رَاعٍ في مَالِ سَيِّدِهِ وَمَسؤُولٌ عَنْ رَعِيَّتِهِ، فَكُلُّكُمْ رَاعٍ وَمَسْؤُولٌ عَنْ رَعِيَّتِهِ». مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيهِ.
On the authority of Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Each of you is a shepherd, and each of you is responsible for his flock: the leader is a shepherd and responsible for his flock; the man is a shepherd over his household and responsible for his flock; the woman is a shepherdess in her husband's house and responsible for her flock; the servant is a shepherd over his master's property and responsible for his flock. So each of you is a shepherd and responsible for his flock." Agreed upon.
وعن عمرو بن شعيب، عن أبيه، عن جدهِ - ﵁ - قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُول الله - ﷺ: «مُرُوا أَوْلادَكُمْ بِالصَّلاةِ وَهُمْ أبْنَاءُ سَبْعِ سِنينَ، وَاضْرِبُوهُمْ عَلَيْهَا، وَهُمْ أَبْنَاءُ عَشْرٍ، وَفَرِّقُوا بَيْنَهُمْ في المضَاجِعِ». حديث حسن رواه أَبُو داود بإسناد حسن.
On the authority of ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Command your children to pray when they are seven years old, and strike them over it when they are ten years old, and separate them in their beds." A good hadith narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a good chain of transmission.
وعن أَبي ثُرَيَّةَ سَبْرَةَ بن معبدٍ الجُهَنِيِّ - ﵁ - قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُول الله - ﷺ: «عَلِّمُوا الصَّبِيَّ الصَّلاةَ لِسَبْعِ سِنِينَ، وَاضْرِبُوهُ عَلَيْهَا ابْنَ عَشْرِ سِنِينَ» حديث حسن رواه أَبُو داود والترمذي، وَقالَ: «حديث حسن». ولفظ أَبي داود: «مُرُوا الصَّبِيَّ بِالصَّلاةِ إِذَا بَلَغَ سَبْعَ سِنِينَ».
On the authority of Abū Thurayya Sabra ibn Maʿbad al-Juhanī (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Teach the child the prayer at seven years, and strike him over it at the age of ten years." A good hadith narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who said: "a good hadith." The wording of Abū Dāwūd is: "Command the child to pray when he reaches seven years."
