٣٥ - باب حق الزوج على المرأة
Allah the Exalted said:
Men are in charge of women1 by [right of] what Allāh has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allāh would have them guard.2 But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance3 - [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them [lightly].4 But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them. Indeed, Allāh is ever Exalted and Grand.
As for the hadiths, among them is the hadith of ʿAmr ibn al-Aḥwaṣ, which preceded in the chapter before this one.
And on the authority of Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: «When a man calls his wife to his bed and she does not come to him, and he spends the night angry with her, the angels curse her until morning.» Agreed upon. And in a narration of the two of them (al-Bukhārī and Muslim): «When a woman spends the night having forsaken her husband's bed, the angels curse her until morning.» And in a narration the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: «By the One in whose Hand is my soul, there is no man who calls his wife to his bed and she refuses him except that the One who is in heaven is displeased with her until he is pleased with her.»
And on the authority of Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) also: that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: «It is not lawful for a woman to fast while her husband is present except with his permission, nor to admit anyone into his house except with his permission.» Agreed upon, and this is the wording of al-Bukhārī.
And on the authority of Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both), from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: «Each of you is a shepherd, and each of you is responsible for his flock: the ruler is a shepherd, the man is a shepherd over the people of his household, and the woman is a shepherdess over the house of her husband and his child. So each of you is a shepherd, and each of you is responsible for his flock.» Agreed upon.
And on the authority of Abū ʿAlī Ṭalq ibn ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: «When a man calls his wife for his need, let her come to him, even if she is at the oven.» Narrated by al-Tirmidhī and al-Nasāʾī, and al-Tirmidhī said: «A good and sound hadith.»
And on the authority of Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: «Were I to command anyone to prostrate to anyone, I would have commanded the woman to prostrate to her husband.» Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, and he said: «A good and sound hadith.»
And on the authority of Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: «Any woman who dies while her husband is pleased with her shall enter Paradise.» Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, and he said: «A good hadith.»
And on the authority of Muʿādh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: «No woman harms her husband in this world except that his wife among the wide-eyed maidens of Paradise (ḥūr al-ʿīn) says: 'Do not harm him—may Allah destroy you! For he is only a guest with you, soon to part from you and come to us.'» Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, and he said: «A good hadith.»
And on the authority of Usāma ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both), from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: «I have not left behind me any trial more harmful to men than women.» Agreed upon.
