Allah the Exalted said:
٢٤٨ - باب الذكر عند الصباح والمساء
Allah the Exalted said:
And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear without being apparent in speech - in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be among the heedless.
The linguists said: "al-āṣāl" is the plural of aṣīl, which is the time between the ʿaṣr and the maghrib [prayers]. And the Exalted said:
So be patient over what they say and exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting; and during periods of the night [exalt Him] and at the ends of the day, that you may be satisfied.
So be patient, [O Muḥammad]. Indeed, the promise of Allāh is truth. And ask forgiveness for your sin1 and exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord in the evening and the morning.
The linguists said: "al-ʿashiyy" is the time between the sun's passing the zenith and its setting. And the Exalted said:
Yā, Seen.1
...the verse [al-Nūr: 36–37]. And the Exalted said:
Indeed, We subjected the mountains [to praise] with him, exalting [Allāh] in the [late] afternoon and [after] sunrise.
On the authority of Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever says, when he enters the morning and when he enters the evening, [the following words] …, no one will come on the Day of Resurrection with anything better than what he has brought, except one who said the like of what he said or added more." And on his authority, who said: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, how I suffered from a scorpion that stung me last night!" He said: "But had you said, when you entered the evening, [the following words] …" Narrated by Muslim. [review: the supplication formula is omitted in the source Arabic]
And on his authority, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he used to say when he entered the morning: [the following words] …; and when he entered the evening he said: [the following words] …. Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who said: "A good (ḥasan) hadith." [review: both supplication formulae are omitted in the source Arabic]
And on his authority: that Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, instruct me with words I may say when I enter the morning and when I enter the evening." He said: "Say: [the following words] …" He said: "Say it when you enter the morning, when you enter the evening, and when you take to your bed." Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who said: "A good and sound (ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ) hadith." [review: the supplication formula is omitted in the source Arabic]
And on the authority of Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: When the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the evening he would say: [the following words] … The narrator said: I think he said within them: "…old age. My Lord, I seek refuge in You from a punishment in the Fire and a punishment in the grave." And when he entered the morning he would say that also: "We have entered the morning, and the dominion has entered the morning belonging to Allah." Narrated by Muslim. And on the authority of ʿAbd Allah ibn Khubayb — with a ḍammah on the dotted khāʾ — (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Recite: [the following] …, three times — they will suffice you against everything." Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who said: "A good and sound (ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ) hadith." [review: the recited sūrahs are omitted in the source Arabic]
And on the authority of ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no servant who says, in the morning of every day and the evening of every night, [the following words] …, three times, but nothing will harm him."
