١٨٣ - باب الحث على سور وآيات مخصوصة

From Abū Saʿīd Rāfiʿ b. al-Muʿallā (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me, "Shall I not teach you the greatest sura in the Qurʾān before you leave the mosque?" Then he took me by the hand, and when we were about to leave, I said, "O Messenger of Allah, you said you would teach me the greatest sura in the Qurʾān?" He said, "[It is] 'Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds' — it is the seven oft-repeated [verses] and the Mighty Qurʾān that I have been given." Narrated by al-Bukhārī.

From Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said concerning "Say: He is Allah, [the] One": "By the One in whose hand is my soul, it equals a third of the Qurʾān." And in another narration: that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to his Companions, "Is any of you incapable of reciting a third of the Qurʾān in a night?" That weighed heavily upon them, and they said, "Which of us can manage that, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "'Say: He is Allah, [the] One; Allah, the Eternal Refuge' is a third of the Qurʾān." Narrated by al-Bukhārī.

And from him: that a man heard another man reciting "Say: He is Allah, [the] One," repeating it over and over. When morning came, he went to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and mentioned that to him — the man considering it to be a small thing. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, it equals a third of the Qurʾān." Narrated by al-Bukhārī.

From Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said concerning "Say: He is Allah, [the] One": "Indeed it equals a third of the Qurʾān." Narrated by Muslim.

From Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): that a man said, "O Messenger of Allah, I love this sura, 'Say: He is Allah, [the] One.'" He said, "Your love of it has admitted you to Paradise." Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, who said, "A good hadith (ḥasan)." Al-Bukhārī also narrated it in his Ṣaḥīḥ in suspended form (taʿlīq).

From ʿUqba b. ʿĀmir (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Do you not see the verses revealed this night, the like of which has never been seen? 'Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak' and 'Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind.'" Narrated by Muslim.

From Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to seek refuge from the jinn and from the evil eye of man, until the two suras of refuge were revealed. When they were revealed, he took to them and left whatever else [he had used]. Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, who said, "A good hadith (ḥasan)."

From Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "There is a sura in the Qurʾān of thirty verses that interceded for a man until he was forgiven; it is 'Blessed is He in whose hand is the dominion.'" Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who said, "A good hadith (ḥasan)." In Abū Dāwūd's narration: "it intercedes."

From Abū Masʿūd al-Badrī (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (ﷺ), who said, "Whoever recites the two verses from the end of Sūrat al-Baqara in a night, they will suffice him." Agreed upon. It is said: they will suffice him [against] harm that night; and it is said: they will suffice him in place of standing in night prayer.

From Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Do not make your houses graves; indeed Satan flees from the house in which Sūrat al-Baqara is recited." Narrated by Muslim.

From Ubayy b. Kaʿb (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "O Abū al-Mundhir, do you know which verse from the Book of Allah that you have is the greatest?" I said, "'Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer.'" He struck me on the chest and said, "May knowledge bring you joy, O Abū al-Mundhir." Narrated by Muslim.

From Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) put me in charge of guarding the zakāt of Ramadan. Someone came and began scooping up the food, so I seized him and said, "I will surely take you to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)." He said, "I am needy, I have dependants, and I am in great need," so I let him go. In the morning the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "O Abū Hurayra, what did your captive do last night?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah, he complained of need and dependants, so I had mercy on him and set him free." He said, "Indeed he lied to you, and he will return." So I knew he would return, because of the words of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). I watched for him, and he came scooping up the food. I said, "I will surely take you to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)." He said, "Let me go, for I am needy and have dependants; I will not return," so I had mercy on him and set him free. In the morning the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me, "O Abū Hurayra, what did your captive do last night?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah, he complained of need and dependants, so I had mercy on him and set him free." He said, "Indeed he lied to you, and he will return." I watched for him the third time, and he came scooping up the food. I seized him and said, "I will surely take you to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) — this is the last of three times: each time you claim you will not return!" He said, "Let me go, and I will teach you some words by which Allah will benefit you." I said, "What are they?" He said, "When you go to your bed, recite Āyat al-Kursī, for then a guardian from Allah will remain over you, and no devil will come near you until morning." So I set him free. In the morning the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me, "What did your captive do last night?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah, he claimed he would teach me some words by which Allah would benefit me, so I set him free." He said, "What were they?" I said, "He told me: when you go to your bed, recite Āyat al-Kursī from its beginning until you complete the verse, 'Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer,' and he told me a guardian from Allah will remain over you, and no devil will come near you until morning." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Indeed he told you the truth, though he is an inveterate liar. Do you know whom you have been speaking with these three nights, O Abū Hurayra?" I said, "No." He said, "That was a devil." Narrated by al-Bukhārī.

From Abū al-Dardāʾ (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever memorises ten verses from the beginning of Sūrat al-Kahf will be protected from the Dajjāl.” In another narration: “from the end of Sūrat al-Kahf.” Muslim narrated them both.

From Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both): While Jibrīl (peace be upon him) was sitting with the Prophet ﷺ, he heard a creaking sound above him. He raised his head and said: “This is a gate of heaven that has been opened today; it has never been opened before, except today.” Then an angel descended from it, and he said: “This is an angel who has descended to the earth; he has never descended before, except today.” He gave the greeting of peace and said: “Rejoice in two lights you have been given that were never given to any prophet before you: the Opening of the Book (al-Fātiḥah) and the closing verses of Sūrat al-Baqarah. You will not read a single letter of them but you will be granted it.” Muslim narrated it. “Al-naqīḍ” means: the sound.
