Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Spitting in the mosque is a sin, and its expiation is burying it." Agreed upon. What is meant by burying it is when the mosque is of earth, sand, or the like, so that one covers it beneath its soil. Abū al-Maḥāsin al-Rūyānī, one of our companions, said in his book al-Baḥr — and it has been said: what is meant by burying it is removing it from the mosque. But if the mosque is paved with stone or plastered with gypsum, and one rubs the spittle into it with his shoe or otherwise, as many of the ignorant do, that is not burying; rather it is an increase in the sin and a multiplying of filth in the mosque. Whoever does that must afterwards wipe it away with his garment, his hand, or something else, or else wash it.
