Allah, the Exalted, said:
رياض الصالحينAbū Zakariyyā Muḥyī al-Dīn Yaḥyā ibn Sharaf al-Nawawī٦٤ - باب فضل الغني الشاكر وهو من أخذ المال من وجهه وصرفه في وجوهه المأمور بها
٦٤ - باب فضل الغني الشاكر وهو من أخذ المال من وجهه وصرفه في وجوهه المأمور بها
As for he who gives and fears Allāh
And He, the Exalted, said:
وَسَيُجَنَّبُهَا ٱلْأَتْقَى
But the righteous one will avoid it
وقال تَعَالَى:
And He, the Exalted, said:
إِن تُبْدُوا۟ ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتِ فَنِعِمَّا هِىَ ۖ وَإِن تُخْفُوهَا وَتُؤْتُوهَا ٱلْفُقَرَآءَ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ ۚ وَيُكَفِّرُ عَنكُم مِّن سَيِّـَٔاتِكُمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ
If you disclose your charitable expenditures, they are good; but if you conceal them and give them to the poor, it is better for you, and He will remove from you some of your misdeeds [thereby]. And Allāh, of what you do, is [fully] Aware.
وقال تَعَالَى:
And He, the Exalted, said:
لَن تَنَالُوا۟ ٱلْبِرَّ حَتَّىٰ تُنفِقُوا۟ مِمَّا تُحِبُّونَ ۚ وَمَا تُنفِقُوا۟ مِن شَىْءٍ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِهِۦ عَلِيمٌ
Never will you attain the good [reward]1 until you spend [in the way of Allāh] from that which you love. And whatever you spend - indeed, Allāh is Knowing of it.
والآيات في فضلِ الإنفاقِ في الطاعاتِ كثيرة معلومة.
The verses on the merit of spending in acts of obedience are many and well known.
وعن عبدِ الله بن مسعود - ﵁ - قَالَ: قَالَ رسول الله - ﷺ: «لاَ حَسَدَ إِلاَّ في اثْنَتَيْنِ: رَجُلٌ آتَاهُ اللهُ مَالًا، فَسَلَّطَهُ عَلَى هَلَكَتِهِ فِي الحَقِّ، وَرَجُلٌ آتَاهُ اللهُ حِكْمَةً فَهُوَ يَقضِي بِهَا وَيُعَلِّمُهَا». متفقٌ عَلَيْهِ. وتقدم شرحه قريبًا.
On the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There is no envy except in two cases: a man whom Allah has granted wealth and the power to spend it in the cause of truth, and a man whom Allah has granted wisdom by which he judges and which he teaches." Agreed upon (al-Bukhārī and Muslim). Its explanation has already been given shortly before.
وعن ابن عمر ﵄، عن النبي - ﷺ - قَالَ: «لاَ حَسَدَ إِلاَّ في اثْنَتَيْنِ: رَجُلٌ آتَاهُ اللهُ القُرْآنَ، فَهُوَ يَقُومُ بِهِ آنَاءَ اللَّيْلِ وَآنَاءَ النَّهَارِ، وَرَجُلٌ آتَاهُ اللهُ مَالًا، فَهُوَ يُنْفِقُهُ آنَاءَ اللَّيْلِ وَآنَاءَ النَّهَارِ». متفقٌ عَلَيْهِ. «الآناء»: السَّاعاتُ.
On the authority of Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both), from the Prophet ﷺ, who said, "There is no envy except in two cases: a man whom Allah has granted the Qurʾān, so he stands in prayer with it throughout the hours of the night and the hours of the day; and a man whom Allah has granted wealth, so he spends it throughout the hours of the night and the hours of the day." Agreed upon (al-Bukhārī and Muslim). "Al-ānāʾ" means the hours.
وعن أَبي هريرة - ﵁: أنَّ فُقَراءَ المُهَاجِرينَ أتَوْا رسول الله - ﷺ - فَقَالُوا: ذَهَبَ أهْلُ الدُّثُورِ بِالدَّرَجَاتِ العُلَى، وَالنَّعِيم المُقيم، فَقَالَ: «وَمَا ذَاك؟» فَقَالوا: يُصَلُّونَ كَمَا نُصَلِّي، وَيَصُومُونَ كَمَا نَصُومُ، وَيَتَصَدَّقُونَ وَلاَ نَتَصَدَّقُ، وَيَعْتِقُونَ وَلاَ نَعْتِقُ، فَقَالَ رسول الله - ﷺ: «أفَلا أُعَلِّمُكُمْ شَيْئًا تُدْرِكُونَ بِهِ مَنْ سَبَقَكُمْ، وَتَسْبِقُونَ بِهِ مَنْ بَعْدَكُمْ، وَلاَ يَكُونُ أحَدٌ أفْضَلَ مِنْكُمْ إِلاَّ مَنْ صَنَعَ مِثْلَ مَا صَنَعْتُمْ؟» قالوا: بَلَى يَا رسول الله، قَالَ: «تُسَبِّحُونَ وَتُكَبِّرُونَ وَتَحْمِدُونَ، دُبُرَ كُلِّ صَلاَةٍ ثَلاثًا وَثَلاثِينَ مَرَّةً» فَرَجَعَ فُقَرَاء المُهَاجِرِينَ إِلَى رسول الله - ﷺ - فقالوا: سَمِعَ إخْوَانُنَا أهلُ الأمْوالِ بِمَا فَعَلْنَا، فَفَعَلُوا مِثلَهُ؟ فَقَالَ رسول الله - ﷺ: «ذَلِكَ فَضْلُ اللهِ يُؤْتِيهِ مَنْ يَشَاءُ». متفقٌ عَلَيْهِ، وَهَذا لفظ رواية مسلم. «الدُّثُور»: الأمْوَالُ الكَثِيرَةُ، وَالله أعلم.
On the authority of Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): The poor among the Emigrants came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "The wealthy have made off with the highest ranks and lasting bliss." He said, "And what is that?" They said, "They pray as we pray, and they fast as we fast, but they give in charity while we cannot, and they free slaves while we cannot." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Shall I not teach you something by which you will catch up with those who have outstripped you and outstrip those who come after you, and none will be better than you except one who does the like of what you do? You should glorify Allah (say Subḥān Allāh), magnify Him (say Allāhu akbar), and praise Him (say al-ḥamdu lillāh) thirty-three times after every prayer." They said, "Of course, O Messenger of Allah." Then the poor Emigrants returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Our brethren, the people of wealth, have heard what we have done, and they have done the same." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "That is the bounty of Allah, which He grants to whom He wills." Agreed upon (al-Bukhārī and Muslim); this is the wording of Muslim's narration. "Al-duthūr" means abundant wealth. And Allah knows best.
