٤١ - باب تحريم العقوق وقطيعة الرحم

On the authority of Abū Bakrah Nufayʿ ibn al-Ḥārith (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Shall I not inform you of the gravest of the major sins?” — three times. We said, “Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “Associating partners with Allah, and disobedience to one’s parents.” He had been reclining, but then he sat up and said, “Beware! And false speech and false testimony.” He kept repeating it until we said [to ourselves], “Would that he had fallen silent.” Agreed upon.

On the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ (may Allah be pleased with them both), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said, “The major sins are: associating partners with Allah, disobedience to one’s parents, killing a soul, and the perjurious oath.” Al-Bukhārī narrated it. “The perjurious oath” (al-yamīn al-ghamūs) is the one a person swears knowingly and deliberately while lying; it was named ghamūs because it plunges the one who swears it into sin.

And on his authority [too]: that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Among the major sins is a man’s reviling of his own parents!” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, and does a man [really] revile his parents?!” He said, “Yes: he insults another man’s father, so that man insults his father, and he insults his mother, so that man insults his mother.” Agreed upon. And in another narration: “Indeed, among the gravest of major sins is that a man should curse his parents!” It was said, “O Messenger of Allah, how does a man curse his parents?!” He said, “He insults another man’s father, so that man insults his father, and he insults his mother, so that man insults his mother.”

On the authority of Abū Muḥammad Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “No one who severs [ties] shall enter Paradise.” Sufyān said in his narration: meaning, one who severs the ties of kinship. Agreed upon.

On the authority of Abū ʿĪsā al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said, “Indeed Allah Most High has forbidden you: disobedience to mothers, withholding and demanding, and the burying alive of daughters; and He has disliked for you: idle gossip (‘it was said’ and ‘he said’), asking excessive questions, and squandering wealth.” Agreed upon. His words “withholding” (manʿan) mean: withholding what is due from one; and “demanding” (hāti) means: seeking what is not one’s right. “The burying alive of daughters” means: interring them while alive. “It was said and he said” means: relating everything one hears, so he says, “Such-and-such was said,” and “So-and-so said such-and-such,” from that whose authenticity he neither knows nor reckons — and it is enough of a lie for a man that he should report everything he hears. “Squandering wealth” means: wasting it and spending it in ways not sanctioned among the aims of the Hereafter and of this world, and failing to safeguard it despite being able to do so. “Asking excessive questions” means: persisting in [asking about] what one has no need of. On this topic there are hadiths that preceded in the chapter before it, such as the hadith, “And I will sever the one who severs you,” and the hadith, “Whoever severs me, Allah severs him.”
