Allah the Exalted said:
رياض الصالحينAbū Zakariyyā Muḥyī al-Dīn Yaḥyā ibn Sharaf al-Nawawī١٥ - باب في المحافظة على الأعمال
١٥ - باب في المحافظة على الأعمال
Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allāh and what has come down of the truth? And let them not be like those who were given the Scripture before, and a long period passed over them, so their hearts hardened; and many of them are defiantly disobedient.
And He the Exalted said:
ثُمَّ قَفَّيْنَا عَلَىٰٓ ءَاثَـٰرِهِم بِرُسُلِنَا وَقَفَّيْنَا بِعِيسَى ٱبْنِ مَرْيَمَ وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلْإِنجِيلَ وَجَعَلْنَا فِى قُلُوبِ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّبَعُوهُ رَأْفَةً وَرَحْمَةً وَرَهْبَانِيَّةً ٱبْتَدَعُوهَا مَا كَتَبْنَـٰهَا عَلَيْهِمْ إِلَّا ٱبْتِغَآءَ رِضْوَٰنِ ٱللَّهِ فَمَا رَعَوْهَا حَقَّ رِعَايَتِهَا ۖ فَـَٔاتَيْنَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ أَجْرَهُمْ ۖ وَكَثِيرٌ مِّنْهُمْ فَـٰسِقُونَ
Then We sent following their footsteps [i.e., traditions] Our messengers and followed [them] with Jesus, the son of Mary, and gave him the Gospel. And We placed in the hearts of those who followed him compassion and mercy and monasticism, which they innovated; We did not prescribe it for them except [that they did so] seeking the approval of Allāh. But they did not observe it with due observance. So We gave the ones who believed among them their reward, but many of them are defiantly disobedient.
وَقالَ تَعَالَى:
And He the Exalted said:
وَلَا تَكُونُوا۟ كَٱلَّتِى نَقَضَتْ غَزْلَهَا مِنۢ بَعْدِ قُوَّةٍ أَنكَـٰثًا تَتَّخِذُونَ أَيْمَـٰنَكُمْ دَخَلًۢا بَيْنَكُمْ أَن تَكُونَ أُمَّةٌ هِىَ أَرْبَىٰ مِنْ أُمَّةٍ ۚ إِنَّمَا يَبْلُوكُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِهِۦ ۚ وَلَيُبَيِّنَنَّ لَكُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ مَا كُنتُمْ فِيهِ تَخْتَلِفُونَ
And do not be like she who untwisted her spun thread after it was strong [by] taking your oaths as [means of] deceit between you because one community is more plentiful [in number or wealth] than another community.1 Allāh only tries you thereby. And He will surely make clear to you on the Day of Resurrection that over which you used to differ.
وَقالَ تَعَالَى:
And He the Exalted said:
وَٱعْبُدْ رَبَّكَ حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِيَكَ ٱلْيَقِينُ
And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty [i.e., death].
وَأَمَّا الأَحاديث فمنها:
As for the hadith, among them are:
حديث عائشة: وَكَانَ أَحَبُّ الدِّين إِلَيْهِ مَا دَاوَمَ صَاحِبُهُ عَلَيهِ. وَقَدْ سَبَقَ في البَاب قَبْلَهُ .
The hadith of ʿĀʾishah: "The most beloved religious deed to him was that which its doer maintained consistently." This has already been mentioned in the preceding chapter.
وعن عمر بن الخطاب - ﵁ - قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُول الله - ﷺ: «مَنْ نَامَ عَنْ حِزْبهِ مِنَ اللَّيلِ، أَوْ عَنْ شَيءٍ مِنْهُ، فَقَرَأَهُ مَا بَيْنَ صَلاةِ الفَجْرِ وَصَلاةِ الظُّهْرِ، كُتِبَ لَهُ كَأَنَّمَا قَرَأَهُ مِنَ اللَّيلِ». رواه مسلم.
ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever sleeps through his portion of devotion at night, or part of it, and then recites it between the Fajr prayer and the Ẓuhr prayer, it is recorded for him as though he had recited it during the night." Narrated by Muslim.
وعن عبد الله بن عَمْرو بن العاص ﵄، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُول الله - ﷺ: «يَا عبدَ اللهِ، لاَ تَكُنْ مِثْلَ فُلان، كَانَ يَقُومُ اللَّيلَ فَتَرَكَ قِيَامَ اللَّيلِ». مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيهِ.
ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O ʿAbd Allāh, do not be like so-and-so, who used to pray during the night and then abandoned praying at night." Agreed upon.
وعن عائشة ﵂، قَالَتْ: كَانَ رَسُول الله - ﷺ - إِذَا فَاتَتْهُ الصَّلاةُ مِنَ اللَّيلِ مِنْ وَجَعٍ أَوْ غَيرِهِ، صَلَّى مِنَ النَّهارِ ثنْتَيْ عَشرَةَ رَكْعَةً. رواه مسلم.
ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ missed his night prayer because of pain or some other cause, he would pray twelve rakʿahs during the day." Narrated by Muslim.
