296 - Chapter on the prohibition of joining hair (extensions), tattooing, and al-washr, which is the filing of the teeth.

٢٩٦ - باب تحريم وصل الشعر والوشم والوشر وهو تحديد الأسنان
They call upon instead of Him none but female [deities], and they [actually] call upon none but a rebellious Satan,
﵂: - ﷺ - ، ﵂
And on the authority of Asmāʾ (may Allah be pleased with her): that a woman asked the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, my daughter has been afflicted by measles and her hair has fallen out, and I have married her off; may I attach [false hair] to it?" He said: "Allah has cursed the woman who joins hair and the woman for whom it is joined." Agreed upon. In another narration: "the woman who joins and the woman who seeks to have it joined." Her saying «fa-tamarraqa» is with the letter rāʾ, and its meaning is: it scattered and fell out. «Al-wāṣilah»: the woman who joins her own hair, or another's hair, to other hair. «Al-mawṣūlah»: the woman whose hair is joined for her. «Al-mustawṣilah»: the woman who asks someone to do that for her. And from ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her), the like of it. Agreed upon.
وعن حُميدِ بنِ عبد الرحْمانِ: أنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ - ﵁ - عامَ حَجَّ على المِنْبَرِ وَتَنَاوَلَ قُصَّةً مِنْ شَعْرٍ كَانَتْ في يَدِ حَرَسِيٍّ فَقَالَ: يَا أهْلَ المَدِينَةِ أيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ؟! سَمِعتُ النَّبيَّ - ﷺ - يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هذِهِ، ويقُولُ: «إنَّمَا هَلَكَتْ بَنُوإسْرَائِيلَ حينَ اتَّخَذَهَا نِسَاؤُهُمْ». متفق عليه.
And on the authority of Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān: that he heard Muʿāwiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), in the year he performed the pilgrimage, speaking from the pulpit, having taken up a lock of hair that was in the hand of a guard. He said: "O people of Medina, where are your scholars? I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) forbidding the like of this and saying: 'The Children of Israel were destroyed only when their women took to this.'" Agreed upon.
وعن ابن عمر ﵄: أنَّ رسُولَ الله - ﷺ - لَعَنَ الوَاصِلَةَ والمُسْتَوْصِلَةَ، والوَاشِمَةَ والمُسْتَوشِمَةَ. متفق عليه.
And on the authority of Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both): that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) cursed the woman who joins hair and the woman who seeks to have it joined, and the woman who tattoos and the woman who seeks to be tattooed. Agreed upon.
وعن ابن مسعود - ﵁ - قال: لَعَنَ اللهُ الوَاشِمَاتِ والمُسْتَوشِمَاتِ وَالمُتَنَمِّصَاتِ، والمُتَفَلِّجَاتِ لِلْحُسْنِ، المُغَيِّرَاتِ خَلْقَ اللهِ، فَقَالَتْ لَهُ امْرَأَةٌ في ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ: وَمَا لِي لاَ ألْعَنُ مَنْ لَعَنَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ - ﷺ - وَهُوَ فِي كِتَابِ اللهِ؟ قالَ اللهُ تعالى: ﴿وَمَا آتَاكُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانْتَهُوا﴾ [سورة الحشر: ٧]. متفق عليه. «المُتَفَلِّجَةُ» هيَ: الَّتي تَبْرُدُ مِنْ أسْنَانِهَا لِيَتَبَاعَدَ بَعْضُهَا عَنْ بَعْضٍ قَلِيلًا، وتُحَسِّنُهَا وَهُوَ الوَشْرُ. «وَالنَّامِصَةُ»: الَّتي تَأخُذُ مِنْ شَعْرِ حَاجِبِ غَيْرِهَا، وتُرَقِّقُهُ لِيَصِيرَ حَسَنًا. «وَالمُتَنَمِّصَةُ»: الَّتي تَأمُرُ مَنْ يَفْعَلُ بِهَا ذَلِكَ.
And on the authority of Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: Allah has cursed the women who tattoo and the women who seek to be tattooed, the women who pluck the eyebrows and the women who file gaps between their teeth for beauty, altering the creation of Allah. A woman spoke to him about that, and he said: "Why should I not curse those whom the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) cursed, when it is in the Book of Allah? Allah, the Exalted, said: 'And whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatever he forbids you, abstain from it' [Sūrat al-Ḥashr: 7]." Agreed upon. «Al-mutafallijah» is the woman who files her teeth so that they are set a little apart from one another, making them more attractive — and that is al-washr. «Al-nāmiṣah»: the woman who removes the hair of another's eyebrow, thinning it so that it becomes attractive. «Al-mutanammiṣah»: the woman who orders someone to do that to her.
