Allah the Exalted said:
رياض الصالحينAbū Zakariyyā Muḥyī al-Dīn Yaḥyā ibn Sharaf al-Nawawī٢٥٩ - باب ذم ذي الوجهين

[An-Nisa: 108].
وعن أَبي هريرة - ﵁ - قَالَ: قَالَ رسول الله - ﷺ: «تَجِدُونَ النَّاسَ مَعادِنَ: خِيَارُهُم في الجَاهِلِيَّةِ خِيَارُهُمْ في الإسْلاَمِ إِذَا فَقُهُوا، وتَجِدُونَ خِيَارَ النَّاسِ في هَذَا الشَّأنِ أَشَدَّهُمْ كَرَاهِيَةً لَهُ، وَتَجِدُونَ شَرَّ النَّاسِ ذَا الوَجْهَينِ، الَّذِي يَأتِي هؤُلاءِ بِوَجْهٍ، وَهَؤُلاءِ بِوَجْهٍ». متفق عَلَيْهِ.
From Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: «You will find people to be like mines: the best of them in the pre-Islamic era are the best of them in Islam when they gain understanding. And you will find the best of people in this matter to be those most averse to it; and you will find the worst of people to be the two-faced one who comes to these with one face and to those with another.» Agreed upon (al-Bukhārī and Muslim).
وعن محمد بن زيدٍ: أنَّ ناسًا قالوا لِجَدِّهِ عبدِ اللهِ بن عمر ﵄: إنَّا نَدْخُلُ عَلَى سَلاَطِيننَا فَنَقُولُ لَهُمْ بِخِلاَفِ مَا نَتَكَلَّمُ إِذَا خَرَجْنَا مِنْ عِنْدِهِمْ. قَالَ: كُنَّا نَعُدُّ هَذَا نِفَاقًا عَلَى عَهْدِ رسُولِ الله - ﷺ. رواه البخاري.
From Muḥammad ibn Zayd: that some people said to his grandfather ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both): We enter upon our rulers and say to them things contrary to what we say when we leave them. He said: We used to count this as hypocrisy in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Recorded by al-Bukhārī.
