٣١٦ - باب ندب من حلف على يمين فرأى غيرها خيرا منها أن يفعل ذلك المحلوف عليه ثم يكفر عن يمينه — Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn

Hadith1715

- ﵁ - - ﷺ:

From ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "And when you have sworn an oath, then see something better than it, carry out the one that is better and make expiation for your oath." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

From Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever swears an oath, then sees something better than it, let him make expiation for his oath and do the one that is better." Narrated by Muslim.

From Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah, if Allah wills, I shall not swear an oath and then see something better than it without making expiation for my oath and doing the one that is better." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

Hadith1718

وعن أَبي هريرة - ﵁ - قَالَ: قَالَ رسولُ اللهِ - ﷺ: «لأَنْ يَلَجَّ أَحَدُكُمْ في يَمِينِهِ في أهْلِهِ آثَمُ لَهُ عِنْدَ اللهِ تَعَالَى مِنْ أَنْ يُعْطِي كَفَّارَتَهُ الَّتي فَرَضَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ» . متفق عَلَيْهِ. قَوْلهُ: «يَلَجّ» بفتح اللام وتشديد الجيم أيْ: يَتَمَادَى فِيهَا، وَلاَ يُكَفِّرُ، وَقَولُهُ: «آثَمُ» هُوَ بالثاء المثلثة، أيْ: أَكْثَرُ إثْمًا.

From Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "For one of you to persist obstinately in his oath concerning his family is more sinful for him before Allah the Exalted than that he should pay the expiation that Allah has prescribed for him." Agreed upon. His statement "yalajj" — with a fathah on the lām and a shaddah on the jīm — means: he persists in it and does not make expiation. And his statement "āthamu" is with the three-dotted thāʾ, meaning: more sinful.
