٦٧ - باب كراهة تمني الموت بسبب ضر نزل به ولا بأس به لخوف الفتنة في الدين

On the authority of Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Let none of you wish for death: if he is a doer of good, then perhaps he will increase [in good]; and if he is a wrongdoer, then perhaps he will seek to make amends." Agreed upon, and this is the wording of al-Bukhārī. In a narration of Muslim, on the authority of Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said, "Let none of you wish for death, nor call for it before it comes to him; for when he dies, his deeds come to an end, and indeed the believer's lifespan only increases him in good."

And on the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Let none of you long for death because of some harm that has befallen him. But if he must [express something], then let him say: 'O Allah, keep me alive so long as life is better for me, and take me in death when death is better for me.'" Agreed upon.

And on the authority of Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim, who said: We went in to visit Khabbāb ibn al-Aratt (may Allah be pleased with him), tending to him [in his illness], and he had been cauterised seven times. He said: "Our companions who went before us passed on, and the world did not diminish their [reward], whereas we have come upon wealth for which we find no place but the dust. Were it not that the Prophet ﷺ forbade us to pray for death, I would have prayed for it." Then we came to him another time while he was building a wall of his, and he said: "Indeed the Muslim is rewarded for everything he spends, except for something he puts into this dust." Agreed upon, and this is the wording of al-Bukhārī's narration.
