Allah the Exalted said:
رياض الصالحينAbū Zakariyyā Muḥyī al-Dīn Yaḥyā ibn Sharaf al-Nawawī٢٤٣ - باب الأمر بالصلاة عليه وفضلها وبعض صيغها
٢٤٣ - باب الأمر بالصلاة عليه وفضلها وبعض صيغها
Indeed, Allāh confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allāh to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allāh to grant him] peace.

On the authority of ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ (may Allah be pleased with them both): that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “Whoever invokes one blessing upon me, Allah will send ten blessings upon him for it.” Narrated by Muslim.
وعن ابن مسعود - ﵁: أنَّ رسول الله - ﷺ - قَالَ: «أَوْلَى النَّاسِ بِي يَومَ القِيَامَةِ أكْثَرُهُمْ عَلَيَّ صَلاَةً». رواه الترمذي، وقال: «حديث حسن».
On the authority of Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The people most deserving of me on the Day of Resurrection will be those who invoke the most blessings upon me.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A good (ḥasan) hadith.”
وعن أوس بن أوس - ﵁ - قَالَ: قَالَ رسولُ الله - ﷺ: «إنَّ مِنْ أفْضَلِ أيَّامِكُمْ يَومَ الجُمُعَةِ، فَأكْثِرُوا عَلَيَّ مِنَ الصَّلاةِ فِيهِ، فَإنَّ صَلاَتَكُمْ مَعْرُوضَةٌ عَلَيَّ». قَالَ: قالوا: يَا رسول الله، وَكَيفَ تُعْرَضُ صَلاتُنَا عَلَيْكَ وَقَدْ أَرَمْتَ؟! قَالَ: يقولُ بَلِيتَ. قَالَ: «إنَّ اللهَ حَرَّمَ عَلَى الأرْضِ أَجْسَادَ الأَنْبِيَاءِ». رواه أَبُو داود بإسنادٍ صحيح.
On the authority of Aws ibn Aws (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Among the most excellent of your days is Friday, so invoke many blessings upon me on it, for your blessings are presented to me.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, how can our blessings be presented to you when you have decayed?” — he said: meaning, when you have crumbled to dust. He said: “Indeed Allah has forbidden the earth to consume the bodies of the prophets.” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a sound chain.
وعن أَبي هريرة - ﵁ - قَالَ: قَالَ رسول الله - ﷺ: «رَغِمَ أنْفُ رَجُلٍ ذُكِرْتُ عِنْدَهُ فَلَمْ يُصَلِّ عَلَيَّ». رواه الترمذي، وقال: «حديث حسن».
On the authority of Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “May the nose be rubbed in dust of a man before whom I am mentioned and he does not invoke blessings upon me.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A good (ḥasan) hadith.”
وعنه - ﵁ - قَالَ: قَالَ رسول الله - ﷺ: «لا تَجْعَلُوا قَبْرِي عِيدًا، وَصَلُّوا عَلَيَّ، فَإنَّ صَلاَتَكُمْ تَبْلُغُنِي حَيْثُ كُنْتُمْ». رواه أَبُو داود بإسنادٍ صحيح.
On his authority (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Do not make my grave a place of festive gathering, and invoke blessings upon me, for your blessings reach me wherever you are.” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a sound chain.
وعنه: أنَّ رسول الله - ﷺ - قَالَ: «مَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ يُسَلِّمُ عَلَيَّ إِلاَّ رَدَّ اللهُ عَلَيَّ رُوحِي حَتَّى أَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمَ». رواه أَبُو داود بإسنادٍ صحيح.
On his authority: that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “There is no one who sends salutations of peace upon me but that Allah returns my soul to me so that I may return his greeting of peace.” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd with a sound chain.
وعن عليّ - ﵁ - قَالَ: قَالَ رسُولُ اللهِ - ﷺ: «البَخِيلُ مَنْ ذُكِرْتُ عِنْدَهُ، فَلَمْ يُصَلِّ عَلَيَّ». رواه الترمذي، وقال: «حديث حسن صحيح».
On the authority of ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The miser is the one before whom I am mentioned and he does not invoke blessings upon me.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A good and sound (ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ) hadith.”
وعن فَضَالَةَ بنِ عُبَيْدٍ - ﵁ - قَالَ: سَمِعَ رسُولُ الله - ﷺ - رَجُلًا يَدْعُو في صَلاَتِهِ لَمْ يُمَجِّدِ الله تَعَالَى، وَلَمْ يُصَلِّ عَلَى النَّبيِّ - ﷺ - فَقَالَ رسُولُ الله - ﷺ: «عَجِلَ هَذَا» ثُمَّ دَعَاهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ - أَوْ لِغَيْرِهِ: «إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَبْدَأْ بِتَحْمِيدِ رَبِّهِ سُبْحَانَهُ، وَالثَّنَاءِ عَلَيْهِ، ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي عَلَى النَّبيِّ - ﷺ - ثُمَّ يَدْعُو بَعْدُ بِمَا شَاءَ». رواه أَبُو داود والترمذي، وقال: «حديث حسن صحيح».
On the authority of Faḍālah ibn ʿUbayd (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard a man making supplication in his prayer without glorifying Allah the Exalted and without invoking blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “This man has been hasty.” Then he called him and said to him — or to another: “When one of you prays, let him begin by praising his Lord, glory be to Him, and extolling Him; then let him invoke blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ; then let him supplicate afterwards for whatever he wishes.” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A good and sound (ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ) hadith.”
وعن أَبي محمدٍ كعبِ بن عُجْرَة - ﵁ - قَالَ: خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا النبيُّ - ﷺ - فَقُلْنَا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا كَيْفَ نُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْكَ، فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ: «قُولُوا: اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ، وعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إبْرَاهِيمَ، إنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجيدٌ. اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ، وعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إبْرَاهِيمَ، إنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجْيدٌ». متفقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
On the authority of Abū Muḥammad Kaʿb ibn ʿUjrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Prophet ﷺ came out to us and we said: “O Messenger of Allah, we already know how to send salutations of peace upon you, so how shall we invoke blessings upon you?” He said: “Say: O Allah, send blessings upon Muḥammad and upon the family of Muḥammad, as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrāhīm; indeed You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, bless Muḥammad and the family of Muḥammad, as You blessed the family of Ibrāhīm; indeed You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.” Agreed upon.
وعن أَبي مسعودٍ البدري - ﵁ - قَالَ: أتَانَا رسُولُ اللهِ - ﷺ - وَنَحنُ في مَجْلِسِ سَعدِ بن عُبَادَةَ - ﵁ - فَقَالَ لَهُ بَشْيرُ بْنُ سَعدٍ: أمَرَنَا الله تَعَالَى أَنْ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ فَسَكَتَ رسُولُ الله - ﷺ - حَتَّى تَمَنَّيْنَا أنَّهُ لَمْ يَسْأَلْهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ رسُولُ الله - ﷺ: «قُولُوا: اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ، وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إبْرَاهِيمَ، وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا بَارَكْت عَلَى آلِ إبْرَاهِيمَ، إنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ، وَالسَّلاَمُ كَمَا قَدْ عَلِمْتُمْ». رواه مسلم.
On the authority of Abū Masʿūd al-Badrī (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us while we were in the gathering of Saʿd ibn ʿUbādah (may Allah be pleased with him), and Bashīr ibn Saʿd said to him: “Allah the Exalted has commanded us to invoke blessings upon you, O Messenger of Allah; so how shall we invoke blessings upon you?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent until we wished he had not asked him. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Say: O Allah, send blessings upon Muḥammad and upon the family of Muḥammad, as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrāhīm; and bless Muḥammad and the family of Muḥammad, as You blessed the family of Ibrāhīm; indeed You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. And the salutation of peace is as you already know.” Narrated by Muslim.
وعن أَبي حُمَيدٍ السَّاعِدِيِّ - ﵁ - قَالَ: قالوا: يَا رسولَ الله كَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عَلَيْكَ؟ قَالَ: «قُولُوا: اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ، وَعَلَى أَزْوَاجِهِ وَذُرِّيَّتِهِ، كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى آلِ إبْرَاهِيمَ، وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ، وَعَلَى أزْوَاجِهِ وَذُرِّيَّتِهِ، كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى آلِ إبْرَاهِيمَ إنَّكَ حَميدٌ مَجِيدٌ». متفقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
On the authority of Abū Ḥumayd al-Sāʿidī (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: They said: “O Messenger of Allah, how shall we invoke blessings upon you?” He said: “Say: O Allah, send blessings upon Muḥammad and upon his wives and his offspring, as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrāhīm; and bless Muḥammad and his wives and his offspring, as You blessed the family of Ibrāhīm; indeed You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.” Agreed upon.
