١٤٢ - باب استحباب تشميت العاطس إذا حمد الله تعالى وكراهة تشميته إذا لم يحمد الله تعالى وبيان آداب التشميت والعطاس والتثاؤب

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed Allah loves sneezing and dislikes yawning. So when one of you sneezes and praises Allah the Exalted, it becomes a duty upon every Muslim who hears him to say to him: May Allah have mercy on you. As for yawning, it is only from Satan, so when one of you yawns let him suppress it as much as he can, for when one of you yawns, Satan laughs at him." Narrated by al-Bukhari.

And on his authority, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: "When one of you sneezes, let him say: All praise is due to Allah; and let his brother or his companion say to him: May Allah have mercy on you. Then when he says to him: May Allah have mercy on you, let him reply: May Allah guide you and set your affairs aright." Narrated by al-Bukhari.

On the authority of Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "When one of you sneezes and praises Allah, then invoke mercy upon him; but if he does not praise Allah, then do not invoke mercy upon him." Narrated by Muslim.

On the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: Two men sneezed in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he invoked mercy upon one of them but did not invoke it upon the other. The one upon whom he had not invoked it said: So-and-so sneezed and you invoked mercy upon him, yet I sneezed and you did not invoke mercy upon me? He said: "This one praised Allah, but you did not praise Allah." Agreed upon.

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sneezed, he would place his hand or his garment over his mouth, and lower — or muffle — his voice thereby. The narrator was uncertain. Narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: "A good and sound hadith."

On the authority of Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Jews used to feign sneezing in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), hoping that he would say to them: May Allah have mercy on you; but he would say: "May Allah guide you and set your affairs aright." Narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: "A good and sound hadith."

On the authority of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you yawns, let him hold his hand over his mouth, for indeed Satan enters." Narrated by Muslim.
