١٠٠ - باب التسمية في أوله والحمد في آخره

On the authority of ʿUmar ibn Abī Salama (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, "Mention the name of Allah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is in front of you." Agreed upon.

On the authority of ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When one of you eats, let him mention the name of Allah, the Exalted. But if he forgets to mention the name of Allah, the Exalted, at its beginning, let him say: 'In the name of Allah at its beginning and its end.'" Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who said: "A good and sound hadith."

On the authority of Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "When a man enters his house and mentions Allah, the Exalted, upon his entering and upon his eating, Satan says to his companions: 'There is no lodging for you and no supper.' But when he enters and does not mention Allah, the Exalted, upon his entering, Satan says: 'You have found lodging.' And when he does not mention Allah, the Exalted, upon his eating, he says: 'You have found lodging and supper.'" Narrated by Muslim.

On the authority of Ḥudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: When we were present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at a meal, we would not put out our hands until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began and put out his hand. Once we were present with him at a meal, and a girl came as if she were being driven forward, and she went to put her hand in the food. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took hold of her hand. Then a bedouin came as if he were being driven forward, and he took hold of his hand. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Satan considers food lawful (for himself) when the name of Allah, the Exalted, is not mentioned over it. He brought this girl in order to make it lawful through her, so I took hold of her hand; and he brought this bedouin in order to make it lawful through him, so I took hold of his hand. By the One in whose hand is my soul, his hand is in my hand together with both of theirs." Then he mentioned the name of Allah, the Exalted, and ate. Narrated by Muslim.

On the authority of Umayyah ibn Makhshī, the Companion (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting while a man was eating, and he did not mention the name of Allah until only one morsel of his food remained. When he raised it to his mouth, he said: 'In the name of Allah at its beginning and its end.' The Prophet ﷺ laughed, then said, "Satan kept eating along with him, but when he mentioned the name of Allah, he vomited up what was in his stomach." Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Nasāʾī.

On the authority of ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was eating some food along with six of his Companions when a bedouin came and devoured it in two mouthfuls. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Truly, had he mentioned Allah's name, it would have sufficed you all." Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, who said: "A good and sound hadith."

On the authority of Abū Umāmah (may Allah be pleased with him): when the Prophet ﷺ removed his table (after eating), he would say, "Praise be to Allah — abundant, good, and blessed praise; (He being) not in need (of being fed), nor to be bidden farewell, nor to be dispensed with — our Lord." Narrated by al-Bukhārī.

On the authority of Muʿādh ibn Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever eats some food and then says, 'Praise be to Allah who has fed me this and provided it for me without any might or power on my part,' will be forgiven his past sins." Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who said: "A good hadith."
